Education Luminator

Kiewit Luminarium is a next-generation science center that joyfully engages people of all ages and identities in exploring astonishing phenomena and learning through hands-on experiences. Recognized as a crown jewel of the region and a national force in its field, the Luminarium’s interactive exhibitions and programs inspire lifelong interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Located on The RiverFront in Omaha, our purpose-built, 82,000-square-foot facility is home to a growing team of talented individuals who, together with collaborators and visitors, bring Kiewit Luminarium to life.

Position Summary

Education Luminators are part-time, hourly museum educators who play a key role in delivering a welcoming and engaging experience for all guests at Kiewit Luminarium. They facilitate exploration and learning through interactive exhibits, science demonstrations, and other educational programming, while helping to ensure a fantastic visitor experience for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about STEM education and enjoy interacting with the public in a dynamic and creative environment. 

We anticipate hiring multiple Education Luminators as part of a collaborative team dedicated to inspiring curiosity and supporting meaningful learning experiences for all guests.

Compensation & Schedule

The starting wage for this position is $19/hour. Education Luminators are expected to work approximately 15 to 25 hours per week, with the potential to work up to 30 hours per week depending on availability and program needs. Schedules vary and may include weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Essential Functions

• Facilitate science demonstrations, Maker Space activities, exhibit experiences, and other educational programs on the museum floor for guests of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, using strong public speaking skills.


• Support school field trips by guiding students through exhibits, conducting educational activities, and assisting with group logistics.


• Initiate informal conversations with guests to deepen engagement and share information about exhibits, programs, and events.


• Deliver exceptional guest service by answering questions, providing wayfinding assistance, and supporting visitors with special needs or concerns.


• Support special events by helping on the museum floor and assisting with tasks such as moving exhibits and furniture, and setting up or tearing down decorations and activity materials.


• Assist external collaborators conducting educational programming onsite at the Luminarium.


• Represent the museum at off-site community events by setting up, presenting mobile activities, and interacting with diverse audiences.


• Maintain exhibit spaces and program areas by organizing materials, restocking supplies, and ensuring cleanliness and safety.


• Support emergency response procedures by guiding guests to appropriate resources and personnel.


• Actively participate in ongoing training, team meetings, and professional development opportunities.


• Perform other duties as assigned by the Education Manager, Museum Floor Manager, or Educational Associates.

Education & Experience Required

• A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates pursuing higher education (associate, bachelor’s, or graduate degree), particularly in education or a STEM field, are preferred.


• Demonstrated interest in education, STEM, social sciences, and/or creating positive visitor experiences.

Necessary Skills & Characteristics

• Enthusiastic about engaging with guests of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds in STEM learning and hands-on exploration.


• Excited to learn new skills, grow professionally, and gain experience in education, science communication, guest engagement, and museum work.


• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a friendly and professional demeanor.


• Comfortable with public speaking and facilitating conversations with individuals and groups.


• Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to respond to guest needs and questions with empathy and clarity.


• Willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team and adapt to changing priorities throughout the day.


• Able to guide and manage the movement of large groups, such as school field trips, in a safe and engaging manner.


• Reliable, self-motivated, and able to exercise good judgment while working independently or with moderate supervision.


• Comfortable performing bio-dissections as part of selected educational activities.


• Available to work a variable schedule, including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and occasional holidays.


• English proficiency is required; bilingual skills (especially Spanish) are a strong asset.


• Must be authorized to work in the United States and be able to obtain a valid work permit.

• Ability to move frequently through the museum and spend long periods on the floor.


• Ability to move from place to place and lift/carry up to 40 pounds short distances.


• Ability to perform position functions and must be willing and able to work on-site, in shared indoor and outdoor space with staff and the public following guidelines in accordance with the health department and local ordinances.
