Founded in 2016, Breakthrough Montessori is a public charter school in Washington, DC. We will serve 388 students in PK3 through grade 6. Position Overview:
The EL Teacher (part-time) is a member of the Academic Team, reports to the EL Guide, and collaborates with the Montessori faculty of Breakthrough Montessori. They participate in identifying English Learners (ELs), provide direct instruction to English Learners (ELs), and partner closely with the students' classroom teams and families to best support their learning and development.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
The part-time EL Teacher position is a 10-month role with typical working hours from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Responsibilities include the following:
English Language (EL) Instruction and Support
- Provide direct instruction and English Language (EL) services to students, as assigned by the EL Guide, including students in PK3 through Grade 6.
- Collaborate with classroom staff to support differentiated instruction and ensure the integration of language development strategies into the general education setting.
- Support students within the classroom or in a pull-out setting, as appropriate.
- Design and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum to support English language acquisition for English Learners (ELs).
- Utilize various instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet diverse student needs, including whole-group, small-group, and individualized instruction.
- Assist in developing EL support plans for all English Learners (ELs) and collaborate with classroom teams to implement these plans effectively.
- Maintain ongoing communication with families of English Learners (ELs) and actively engage them in their child’s learning.
- Plan and facilitate workshops to support and inform families.
- Prepare progress reports for all students on your caseload and participate in family conferences to discuss student development and progress.
- Attend meetings, training sessions, and planning cooperatives to ensure comprehensive support for students’ academic and language development.
- Manage the learning environment to promote positive student behavior and ensure a safe, inclusive, and healthy classroom.
- Participate in school events and activities beyond regular school hours as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Data and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations relating to English Learners (ELs)
- Coordinate and administer required language proficiency and academic achievement tests to determine placement, monitor student progress on an ongoing basis, and determine when a student is to be exited from the program
- Compile and maintain each student's profile summary (record of achievement and progress)
- Conduct ongoing monitoring of student progress
- Help maintain a school database of EL and EL-eligible students and assist in gathering and reporting data for reporting requirements.
- Collect and report data to meet compliance and reporting requirements, including submissions to the State, Department of Education, census, grant applications, the annual report, and other mandated reports
- Participate and contribute to IEPs, eligibility meetings, MTSS, and 504 plans
- Support with the administering of required language proficiency tests for identifying English Learner (ELs)

Education and Experience:
- Experience working with diverse populations of students, parents, and families.
- Must be “highly qualified” and have at minimum a BA and passing score on the state-required test for ESL instruction, or Certification in ESL instruction, or a Master's in TESOL or related field.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master's degree preferred.
- Knowledge of EL regulations.
- 2 – 5 years of successful classroom teaching experience with an emphasis in ESL
- Montessori experience preferred. Without previous Montessori experience, demonstrate an eagerness to learn about the method and support its implementation.
