Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to mentor students, guide faculty on industry engagement, inform internal processes for partnerships, and foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across the college. This is a part-time position ideal for an experienced entrepreneur looking to engage with the next generation of engineers and innovators in a collaborative academic setting. This position will, in particular, engage with graduate programs in CES that address the business and management aspects of technology including the Master of Science in Technical Management (MSTM), Master of Product Development (MPD), and related graduate certificate programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Education and Mentorship 

  • Assist in developing students’ understanding of entrepreneurship and the business aspects of engineering through curriculum development and guest lectures.
  • Assist student teams in identifying market opportunities, refining business models, and communicating the business case for their products and designs.
  • Participate in design reviews for senior capstone projects and master’s theses defenses.
  • Advise thesis projects for MPD students.
  • Provide one-on-one and group mentorship to engineering students and faculty with entrepreneurial interests. 

Program Development and Support 

  • Collaborate with CES leadership to develop and support entrepreneurship-related programming such as workshops, speaker series, hackathons, and the development and activation of new spaces for collaboration and product realization in CES.
  • Serve as a judge or coach for campus competitions such as the E&S Student Research Symposium, project showcases, design competitions, and pitch contests. 

Ecosystem Building

  •  Help build connections between CES and external startup communities, including incubators, non-profits, investors, and industry leaders.
  • Act as a liaison between Detroit Mercy and entrepreneurial networks to attract external resources and opportunities for sponsored projects, course projects, professional training, and employment.
  • Inform the development and refinement of internal policies and processes to ease the burden of establishing external partnerships with Detroit Mercy.
  • Provide feedback on how to raise the profile of Detroit Mercy while making it easier for potential partners to navigate the University.

Requirements

  

Minimum Qualifications

Education – A college degree or four to eight years of work experience in a related field.
Experience -Five years to seven years (Equivalent combination of Education and Employment).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree, preferred.
  • Background in engineering or science, preferred.
  • Proven track record as a successful entrepreneur or startup founder, preferably with a STEM-focused company.
  • Deep understanding of the startup lifecycle, from ideation to fundraising and scaling.
  • Passion for higher education and student development.
  • Prior teaching or mentoring experience with students or early-stage startups desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Self-motivated, proactive, and results-oriented with a high level of initiative.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present ideas and influence stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with partners at all levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).

Work Environment  

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
