Facilitator, Combat Hate Program (Part-Time Contract, Illinois)

Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) is a global Jewish human rights organization that confronts anti-Semitism and hate, defends the safety of Israel and Jews worldwide, and teaches the lessons of the Holocaust through awareness, advocacy, justice, education, and its Museums of Tolerance. With a constituency of over 400,000 member families since its founding in 1977, the SWC has an international footprint through its Museums of Tolerance, Moriah Films, and the Digital Terrorism + Hate Project.  

Headquartered in Los Angeles, it maintains operations in New York, Chicago, Miami, Toronto, Paris, Berlin, Jerusalem, and Buenos Aires. It is an accredited Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) at the United Nations, UNESCO, the Organization of American States, the Latin American Parliament, and the Council of Europe and maintains relationships with the highest levels of governments throughout the world.  

In 1993, the Center opened the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles to worldwide acclaim. The Museum has served as the Center’s flagship educational arm, challenging visitors to confront bigotry and racism, and to understand the Holocaust in both historical and contemporary contexts. In addition, the Center developed Moriah Media to produce theatrical documentaries to educate global audiences. Moriah has produced 17 documentaries to date, two of which have received the Academy Award for best feature documentary, The Long Way Home and Genocide.  

About the Role 

The Illinois Mobile Museum of Tolerance is seeking dynamic and passionate educators to facilitate our in-classroom Combat Hate workshops. This is a flexible, contract-based opportunity for those who want to make a meaningful impact by teaching middle and high school students about combating hate and fostering inclusive communities in IL. Our ideal candidate has experience working with middle and/or high school students, is passionate about social justice, and comfortable with traveling to different schools within their region. Assigned regions of IL include Northwest IL, Chicagoland & Northeast IL, Central IL, and Southern IL. Regions will be assigned based on the facilitator’s residency. 

This role reports to the Program Manager.   This is a part-time contracted role for three months, with the potential for renewal or a permanent position. Hours are flexible but will require travel to school sites and availability during school hours. 

About the Workshop 

“Combat Hate: A Digital Media Literacy Workshop,” is an in-classroom workshop available for students grades 5-12. It empowers students to identify hate speech on social media, analyze manipulation and disinformation tactics, and curate a positive digital footprint. The workshop uses Media Literacy, Digital Citizenship, Upstander Approach, Empowerment Model, and Culturally Responsive and Sustained Teaching to educate students on how to combat online hate through informed action and digital control 

Responsibilities 

• Deliver Combat Hate workshops in person (and virtually as needed) to 5th–12th grade classrooms within designated region in Illinois.


• Adapt to the unique needs of each classroom environment while adhering to program guidelines.


• Must be available to travel. Hours are flexible and the workday can begin as early as 7.30am.


• Communicate with the Program Manager to provide feedback on workshop delivery.


• Participate in mandatory facilitator training and ongoing professional development opportunities.


• Ensure workshop data is accurately recorded in the tracker in a timely and organized manner.


• Provide coverage for other MMOT workshops in your area as needed. 

Requirements 

• A reliable vehicle for travel. Mileage reimbursement provided.


• Clean Driving Record


• Occasional overnight travel, with lodging covered by the company. 

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) 

• Arrive prepared for all scheduled workshops, equipped with relevant materials (e.g., notes, laptop, educational resources).


• Present workshops in alignment with prescribed program outlines and methodologies.


• Conduct a minimum of eight workshops per month, depending on availability.


• Provide actionable feedback to enhance program quality and delivery.


• Weekly Check-ins with Point of Contact: Director, Field Education Central & West 

Experience and Skills 

• Classroom Experience: At least two years working with students in late elementary, middle, or high school settings.


• Facilitation Skills: Strong ability to lead discussions on challenging topics and encourage meaningful dialogue.


• Social Media Awareness: Familiarity with how the internet and social media are used to spread hateful ideologies, as well as strategies to counteract these influences.


• Education: Bachelor’s degree in social science, history, English language arts, human rights, or related fields preferred.


• Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, virtual environment with last-minute changes.


• Bonus Skills: Spanish language proficiency or other foreign language skills are a plus.
