Position Summary


The Part-Time Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for supporting the day-to-day maintenance, repair, and upkeep of Veterans Place's campus, including administrative offices, transitional housing, apartment units, common areas, and surrounding grounds. This position works closely with the Facilities Specialist to ensure all facilities remain safe, functional, and welcoming for veterans, staff, volunteers, and visitors.


The ideal candidate is dependable, self-motivated, and skilled in general building maintenance with the ability to troubleshoot a variety of maintenance issues while providing excellent customer service.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities


General Building Maintenance



  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to buildings, offices, apartments, and transitional housing units.

  • Complete work orders in a timely and professional manner.

  • Repair drywall, doors, locks, windows, flooring, cabinetry, and other building components.

  • Perform basic plumbing repairs, including faucets, toilets, drains, and fixtures.

  • Perform minor electrical repairs such as replacing outlets, switches, lighting fixtures, and bulbs.

  • Complete basic carpentry and painting projects.



Preventative Maintenance



  • Conduct routine inspections of buildings, equipment, and grounds.

  • Perform preventative maintenance on facility systems and equipment.

  • Identify maintenance issues before they become larger repair projects.

  • Maintain maintenance logs and report significant repair needs to the Facilities Specialist.



Grounds Maintenance



  • Maintain sidewalks, parking areas, and exterior common spaces.

  • Assist with seasonal maintenance, including snow removal, salting, and debris cleanup.

  • Coordinate basic landscaping and exterior upkeep.

  • Cut grass, prune bushes, weed flower beds, and maintain weed growth.



Apartment and Unit Turnover



  • Prepare apartments and transitional housing units for new residents.

  • Complete repairs, painting, cleaning coordination, and inspections prior to occupancy.

  • Ensure units meet Veterans Place quality and safety standards.



Vendor & Contractor Support



  • Assist contractors while on-site.

  • Receive deliveries and verify materials.

  • Help coordinate scheduled maintenance and repair projects.

  • Communicate maintenance concerns to the Facilities Specialist.



Safety & Compliance



  • Ensure facilities remain compliant with applicable health and safety standards.

  • Identify potential safety hazards and correct them when appropriate.

  • Respond promptly to maintenance emergencies during scheduled work hours.

  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment.



Inventory & Equipment



  • Maintain maintenance tools and equipment.

  • Assist with tracking maintenance supplies and inventory.

  • Notify the Facilities Specialist when supplies require replenishment.



Additional Responsibilities



  • Assist with office moves, furniture assembly, and event setup/breakdown.

  • Support organizational improvement projects and capital improvements.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Qualifications


Education



  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Technical or vocational training in maintenance, construction, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or a related trade preferred.



Experience



  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in building maintenance, facilities maintenance, property maintenance, construction, or a related field preferred.

  • Experience performing general repairs across multiple trades.

  • Experience working in residential or commercial facilities is preferred.

  • Nonprofit or human services experience is a plus.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Working knowledge of:

    • General carpentry

    • Plumbing

    • Electrical systems

    • Drywall repair

    • Painting

    • Basic HVAC troubleshooting



  • Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance requests.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Strong communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism while interacting with veterans, staff, contractors, and vendors.



Physical Requirements


This position requires frequent physical activity, including:



  • Standing and walking for extended periods.

  • Climbing ladders and stairs.

  • Bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.

  • Lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds.

  • Working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Safely operating maintenance equipment and power tools.



Certifications & Licenses



  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License with an acceptable driving record required.

  • Ability to operate Veterans Place vehicles.

  • OSHA 10 certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).

  • Trade certifications are a plus but not required.



Work Schedule



  • Approximately 24 hours per week

  • Three (3) on-site workdays per week

  • Schedule determined based on organizational needs

  • Occasional flexibility may be required for emergency maintenance situations
