Fish Passage Technician - Seasonal Help

Seasonal Help- August 25 – December 15 (16 weeks)

Location: Newport Dam in Newport, VT

As a Fish Passage Technician at Newport Dam, you'll get hands-on with our fish ladder, sorting and counting various fish species while ensuring everything is running smoothly. Whether it's checking water flow, hauling fish upstream, or making sure all the data is spot-on, your work will play a crucial role in supporting migratory fish. Perfect for someone who loves nature and doesn’t mind getting their hands a little wet!

Reporting to the Regional Operations Manager

Responsibilities:

• Monitor upstream fish passage system at Newport Dam.


• Daily operation of fish ladder to capture, sort, and count various species of migratory and resident fish.


• Migratory fish species will be transported a short distance upstream in tanks hauled by truck and trailer.


• Monitor fishway for proper water flow, remove debris, etc.


• Perform quality control checks to ensure that all data collected are accurate and complete.


• This position will require working 2-4 hours per day.


• This position will require working weekends and holidays.

Required Skills:

• Must be highly motivated and have the ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others.


• Must be able to learn identify a variety of migratory and resident fish species.


• Ability to keep data organized and error free.


• Must have good time management skills.


• Must be able to identify safety and environmental hazards and then prepare and follow job safety plans appropriate for all work.


• Must make safety the highest priority in performing all work activities.


• Valid driver's license required.
