Job Description - Front Desk Assistant

JOB POSTING:

Front Desk Assistant

Grand Rapids Pride Center

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

Since 1988, the Grand Rapids Pride Center (GRPC) has worked to create positive change for the 2-SLGBTQ+ community by breaking down barriers, creating awareness, providing inclusive services, and bridging relationships. We envision a vibrant, thriving community of 2-SLGBTQ+ people who are celebrated and empowered to achieve their fullest potential. Our guiding principles are Authenticity, Accountability, Community Care, Liberation, and Justice. GRPC offers supportive services through social and support groups, education and training, health access programs, and advocacy initiatives.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Front Desk Assistant is the first point of contact at the Grand Rapids Pride Center, providing a welcoming and safe environment for all visitors. This role involves answering phones and walk-ins, sharing information about GRPC’s programs and services, giving tours, managing inventory and restocking materials (e.g., brochures, tests, masks, flags, and merch), and maintaining a clean, professional lobby. Additional duties include supporting administrative tasks like mail distribution, scanning and filing documents, managing appointments, and ensuring opening and closing procedures are followed. The ideal candidate is friendly, detail-oriented, and committed to creating a safe and inclusive space for the 2-SLGBTQ+ community. This is a part-time (with the potential to move full-time in the future) in-person position in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Greet and assist visitors in a friendly, affirming, and safe manner

  • Maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all people coming to GRPC.

  • Maintain opening and closing procedures for the office.

  • Answer and direct phone calls; screen and forward calls as needed

  • Provide information about GRPC programs, events, and services

  • Manage walk-in traffic, registrations, and drop-in contracts

  • Give tours of the building to guests and new community members

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming lobby/reception area

  • Ensure brochures, flyers, and free resource items (e.g., masks, test kits) are stocked and up to date

  • Oversee merchandise inventory

  • Sort incoming mail and deliver to Executive Assistant; ensure outgoing mail is sent out

  • Copy, scan, and file documents as needed

  • Monitor office supplies and notify the Executive Assistant when restocking is needed

  • Report any concerns or issues to management promptly

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong critical thinking skills with a proven attention to detail, organization, timely independent decision making, and ability to prioritize tasks with competing priorities.

  • Proficiency working with computers, Microsoft Office and Google Suites.

  • High School Diploma/GED degree required but lived experience is valued if formal education has not been attained, please include information in the resumé &/or cover letter.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, public speaking, facilitation, and coalition-building capabilities are strongly preferred; willingness to learn and grow in these skills is required.

  • Understanding of 2-SLGBTQ+, social justice, civil rights policy issues, overlapping identities and systems of oppression is strongly preferred; a passion for GRPC’s mission and work to create a region where 2-SLGBTQ+ people thrive is essential.

  • Reliable transportation and the ability to travel on a limited basis (you are not required to have a license or your own vehicle, but you must be reliable)

  • Offers of employment may be contingent on satisfactory results of a criminal history background check as well as a Central Registry Clearance (sex offender registry) check. The background check is a requirement, and any concerns you may have about it can be discussed beforehand.

COMPENSATION:

  • $21/hour

  • Direct deposit available

  • Healthcare benefits (medical, vision, dental, worker’s comp, life insurance)

  • 3 weeks PTO (plus medical and bereavement leave)

  • 20 Paid holidays

  • Annual professional development opportunities

While all qualified candidates are invited to apply, candidates identifying as LGBTQ+ especially with historically silenced overlapping identities are highly preferred.

We strongly encourage candidates who feel they meet most, but not all, criteria, to apply. We are not looking for "perfect" candidates but candidates who have a passion and willingness to learn. We want everyone in our community to thrive.
