Job Summary
In addition to teaching classes, the Grammar School STEM Department Head plays an integral role in promoting excellence in teaching and learning to positively impact student learning and the school environment. Working with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Division Director, the STEM Department Head will use the Curriculum Review Process to ground the department’s work in cycles of inquiry and continuous improvement.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Teaching Faculty Member
Teaches a reduced number of science/STEM classes per cycle with remaining time to conduct department business (Teaching assignments will be determined by the Division Director)
Assumes responsibility for assigned duties
Assists with coverage of classrooms when needed and available
Communication Liaison & Schoolwide Collaborator
Serves as liaison between department faculty, Divisional administration, and the Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Attends and/or facilitates school-wide events and receptions during and after regular school hours as required to represent the department
Participates in cross-divisional collaboration meetings and professional learning sessions five days after the last day of school for students and the week prior to Onboarding Week (10 days of availability)
Participates in cross-divisional Academic Team meetings throughout the school year
Leader in Curriculum and Pedagogy
Uses the Curriculum Review Process to identify and set department goals for curriculum development, revision, and refinement
Uses the CGPS Framework to focus on enhancing teachers’ ability to provide instruction that builds students’ sense of engagement in the ownership of learning
Considers the diversity of perspectives when including curricular content and considers the implications of curricular decisions on the schools' many diverse members
Works with the department to collect, analyze, and interpret a variety of data, including MAP, and uses it to guide the department’s instructional decisions to positively impact student learning
Helps inspire/lead cross-curricular integration
Keeps abreast of current best practices and research in the subject area and shares information with the department
Collects and organizes course materials and resources for easy accessibility
Engages in professional learning to enhance leadership and collaboration skills
Department Observations & Support and Hiring
Conducts informal collegial visits in the department and provides feedback based on the Framework
Provides collaborative and one-on-one support for department members
Consults with the administration on personnel issues in order to promote high standards of performance
Plays a key role in interviewing and evaluating candidates as a member of search committees and includes additional department members as needed in the hiring process
Managing Department Logistics
Arranges, organizes, and facilitates department meetings
Leads the use of educational technology within the division
Coordinates and plans department events such as Maker Expo and Science Shares
Arranges Science/STEM-related field trips
Facilitates the development of the department’s annual and multi-year goals connected to schoolwide and divisional goals and areas of interest
Evaluates, reflects, and revises goals annually
Promotes and models professional inquiry in department meetings
Skills & Experience
Excellent knowledge of the subject area content and pedagogy
Adept at using technology
Successful experience building relational trust with colleagues and modeling collaboration focused on student success
Effective communicator; ability to communicate articulately (verbal and written) with the community
Experience in leadership including the ability to prioritize needs and work, organizational skills, and the ability to use data to inform decision-making
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree in Education is preferred
Three to five years of teaching experience
Compensation
Annual stipend
Hiring Process
All candidates must complete the interest form and interview process
Appointments are for three years at the discretion of the administration
A needs assessment of the position will be conducted every three years
The GS STEM Department Head may reapply after their three-year appointment
Year one of the appointment is 2025-26
