The Coach fulfills the mission of the Catholic school by developing, initiating, and administering the program in a particular sport which adequately prepares the student athlete for interscholastic competition. The Coach is recommended to the principal by the athletic director, hired by the principal, and evaluated in consultation with the athletic director.
Position Responsibilities:
Design and implement a training program that advances individual and team performance skills, to support the achievement of the program’s purpose
Advance each student-athlete’s level of knowledge with regard to sport nutrition, biomechanics, exercise science, and sport psychology as it relates to improvement of sport performance
Helps Assistant Athletic Director design a competitive schedule that maximizes athlete development and performance
Holds summer camps to build rapport and teach skills instruction with incoming and potential high school and middle school students
Builds relationships with high school and middle school coaches as an outreach for sharing of ideas and philosophies
Conform to the highest standards of professional conduct regarding compliance with the athletic department and school policies, procedures and adherence to the rules and regulations of TAPPS athletic governance of which the institution is a member
Demonstrate master teaching competencies with regard to (a) sport skill instruction, (b) motivation, and (c) coaching skills during competitive events
Relate well to officials, high school coaches, parents, the media, alumni, donors, and the public
Provide strong leadership in the personal development of student-athletes as demonstrated by high standards of behavior and good public speaking skills of all team members
Demonstrate a high level of involvement in the personal and academic development of student-athletes through the support of the school’s academic and personal development programs serving those student-athletes
Manage a cost-effective and administratively efficient sport program
Exhibit good writing and speaking abilities
Train and supervise assistant coaches toward the end of developing head coach capabilities and supporting all program objectives
Adhere to department policy regarding coaches code of ethics
Complete other duties as assigned by the athletic director
Contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with all staff, student-athletes, and external constituents through (a) a positive and constructive approach to all tasks, (b) respect for the competencies of others, and (c) appropriate conflict resolution behavior
Instruction
Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in the sport assigned.
Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.
Work with other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes.
Program Management
Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.
Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Keep informed of and ensure compliance with all rules.
Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.
Work with athletic director to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements
Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of coaching program and make changes based on findings.
Student Management
Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports including out-of-town trips.
Instruct and advise students on regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
Communication
Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
Administration
Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials.
Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within program.
Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all campus athletic equipment.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Certification Requirements:
Required: Bachelors’ degree in physical education or related area; coaching certification from
recognized sport governing body
Preferred: Highest level of international sport federation coaching certification
Experience and Competency Requirements:
Required:
· Five years of coaching experience
· Demonstrated ability to develop competitive athletes
· Demonstrated academic success of previously coached student-athletes
· Exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to TAPPS rules and regulations
· First Aid/CPR Certification
· Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with school bus and air brake endorsement
Preferred:
· Playing or coaching experience at the amateur national championship level
· Ten years of coaching experience at a high competitive level
· Leadership of a State Championship program demonstrating sport success, student-athlete academic success, and behavioral conduct commensurate with the stated purpose of the program
License and Credentials
Reliable transportation
Valid driver license
Valid vehicle insurance
