Responsibilities:
- Provide overall medical direction and leadership for the hospice program.
- Ensure compliance with Medicare Conditions of Participation, accrediting bodies, and all federal/state regulations.
- Oversee adherence to organizational policies, procedures, and bylaws.
- Develop and review policies related to patient care, medical education, and emergency procedures.
- Collaborate with leadership to evaluate and improve medical education and quality initiatives (QAPI).
- Serve as a liaison and hospice care champion to community physicians and healthcare partners.
- Educate physicians, staff, and volunteers on terminal illness care and hospice eligibility.
- Review and certify terminal illness eligibility; complete and document face-to-face visits for benefit recertification.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to manage care plans, pain/symptom management, and medication oversight.
- Attend IDG meetings and support team-based care planning and updates at least every 15 days.
- Serve as primary physician if the attending is unavailable or relinquishes care.
- Maintain documentation reflecting patient status and care provided.
- Stay current with hospice best practices, treatment protocols, and end-of-life care trends.
- Provide guidance on ethical issues, conflict resolution, and patient/family counseling.
- Ensure 24/7 availability of physician services to meet patient needs.
- Assist with evaluating protocols and optimizing care quality and cost-efficiency.
