Position Overview
As a Hospice Spiritual Counselor, you will provide essential spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, caregivers, and staff. You will help individuals of all faith backgrounds—or no faith at all—find peace, comfort, and meaning at the end of life. You will also serve as a resource to local clergy, community partners, and the broader care team.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate spiritual counseling to patients, families, and caregivers
- Honor and support each patient’s spiritual beliefs, traditions, and needs
- Contact and collaborate with patients' clergy (with consent) and coordinate with community spiritual leaders
- Offer funeral or memorial services when requested
- Attend interdisciplinary team meetings and collaborate with bereavement and volunteer teams
- Assist in staff and volunteer training related to spiritual care
- Provide spiritual support to hospice staff and volunteers as needed
- Complete documentation accurately and timely in accordance with hospice policies
- Participate in on-call rotation and make scheduled visits to homes or facilities
- Uphold patient dignity and advocate for their spiritual preferences and wishes
What You Bring
Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in the pastoral field
3+ years preferred, particularly in end-of-life or healthcare settings
Education & Credentials:
Licensed or ordained clergy in the state of New Mexico
Master of Divinity degree or equivalent.
- Completion of 4 Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) units preferred
- Valid driver’s license and proof of current auto liability insurance

- Deep empathy and emotional intelligence
- Ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Cooperative, team-oriented attitude
- High level of discretion, professionalism, and spiritual sensitivity
