Ice Production Trainee

TRAINEESHIP OVERVIEW
Under the direction of the Operations Manager, Ice Production Trainees will develop practical skills and receive hands-on experience in ice production and distribution. Reports directly to the Operations Manager. Part-time seasonal employment is estimated from May to August.
ON-THE-JOB TRAINING AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in all aspects of ice production, storage, and delivery to fishing vessels.
- Coordinate ice supply with vessel and tender schedules and offloads, working collaboratively with the fleet and the Operations Manager.
- Learn efficient methods for moving ice and maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
- Learn to troubleshoot basic mechanical problems related to ice production.
- Communicate with vessel crews, the tender, the Operations Manager, and other relevant personnel to facilitate seamless operations.
- Strictly adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols for ice handling, storage, and delivery.
- Other duties as assigned.
STRUCTURED LEARNING
Professional Ice Machine Technician Certification
Participate in a self-directed online professional ice machine technology certification program. Tuition provided by APICDA.
- Learn about the different types of ice machines, the ice they produce, and what they need to work.
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of ice machine maintenance and repair.
- Discover the latest ice machine technologies and how to use them effectively.
- Technicians need charts, graphs, and settings every day when servicing ice machines. There are no rules of thumb to wing it! Learn where to locate and interpret factory service manuals online from any mobile internet-connected device.
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of ice machine maintenance. Most often, unscheduled service is needed, resulting from deferred maintenance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Most operational tasks will be performed at the Nelson Lagoon ice production facility during the summer months, located in Nelson Lagoon. While working in the field, this job operates both indoors and outdoors in an unpredictable and remote environment with limited phone and internet connections. While working outdoors, the worksite conditions may be cold, wet, and damp. Requires a sense of awareness of potential hazards while working near water or heavy machinery.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and/or listen. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, climb stairs, use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel, and reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to lift, rotate, and lower 60 pounds consistently throughout the workday.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be a resident of an APICDA community: Atka, Akutan, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, St. George, or Unalaska
- High school degree or GED.
- Must be a proficient certified forklift operator or obtain proficiency and certification prior to independent operation.
- Must possess a 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or become fully certified before handling waste oil.
Knowledge and Experience
- Knowledge of commercial fishing operations and the needs of fishing vessels.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to manage schedules and prioritize tasks.
- Familiarity with relevant regulations and safety standards, or becoming familiar with all areas before working independently.
- Dock crane operation experience, preferred.
- Prior work and/or living experience in a remote wilderness setting.

- Self-motivated and reliable.
