Job Description - Instructor- Surgical Technology

Description

  SUMMARY:  

The Surgical Technology Instructor will provide high-quality education and hands-on clinical training to students in accordance with CAAHEP accreditation standards. This role involves both classroom instruction and supervision of students in clinical settings, ensuring they are prepared for a successful career as surgical technologists.    

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Instruction and Curriculum Development: 

o Develop and deliver engaging and comprehensive lectures and lab sessions covering all aspects of surgical technology, including anatomy and physiology, sterile techniques, surgical procedures, and patient care. 

o Create and maintain course materials, including syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, and assessments, in alignment with CAAHEP accreditation requirements. 

o Evaluate and assess student performance through exams, practical skills assessments, and clinical evaluations to ensure competency in all required areas. 

2. Clinical Coordination and Supervision: 

o Coordinate and supervise students’ clinical rotations in various surgical settings, ensuring a safe and educational experience. 

o Collaborate with clinical site coordinators and preceptors to monitor student progress, provide feedback, and resolve any issues that arise during clinical experiences. 

o Maintain accurate records of student clinical hours, competencies, and evaluations as required by accreditation standards. 

3. Student Support and Advisement: 

o Provide academic advising and career guidance to students, helping them navigate the program and prepare for certification and employment. 

o Foster a supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement, participation, and professional growth. 

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE – SKILLS – ABILITIES:

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills as well as active listening.
  • Must possess strong time management skills and ability to work well under pressure.  
  • Able to multitask, prioritize, show extreme resourcefulness and problem-solving skills.  
  • Must be able to follow policies and procedures and support the Program Director and Managing Director.  
  • Must be able to express a positive attitude about school activities.  
  • Proficient with basic office equipment, computers, and computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory and accreditation agency policies, as applicable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess a credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  • Knowledgeable of course development, instruction, evaluation, and academic advising.
  • Documents a minimum total of two years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.
  • Experience working with a learning management system preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time, and have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard, and other office equipment.
