Job Description - K-8 Physical Education and Rock Climbing Teacher

New York, NY

The Browning School is a K-12 boys school located on 62nd Street in midtown Manhattan, New York. Founded by scholar and teacher John A. Browning, The Browning School has been a leader in fostering the intellectual and personal growth of boys and young men since 1888. Serving roughly 450 students in kindergarten through grade 12, Browning strives to combine the best of a traditional prep school environment and curriculum with imaginative teaching and a strong value system – all in a single-sex setting.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Browning is searching for a part-time K-8 PE and Rock Climbing Teacher for the 2026-2027 academic year. The position will begin on or around August 27, 2026. The expected annual salary range for this position is $32,000-$38,000, commensurate with experience--an exact offer reflects a candidate’s relevant experience, skill level, and the responsibilities of the role. A bachelor’s degree or considerable experience in the role is required, while an advanced degree in a related field is preferred. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.

Key Responsibilities

Physical Education Teachers are responsible for instructing students in physical fitness, sports, and other physical activities. They develop and implement lesson plans, assess student progress, and encourage participation in various activities. PE teachers also promote healthy lifestyles and help students develop important physical skills and social-emotional competencies. Developing a foundation of content knowledge is also an emphasis at Browning, while enriching the experience with activities that engage the mind of a Browning boy. All Browning teachers are responsible for building strong relationships with students and delivering the content and curriculum of the Browning program. Successful teachers believe in and desire the growth of all their students and have a passion for their subject matter and for the art, craft, and science of pedagogy. Ultimately, teachers are responsible for the most important work of our School -- knowing our boys and teaching them well.

The Part Time PE and Rock Climbing Teaching is tasked with:

  1. Designing and teaching a rock climbing unit as a signature part of Browning’s Middle School PE program in Grades 6-8
  2. Teach 3 periods of rock climbing classes and 5 additional periods of PE classes each week
  3. Leading a weekly MS rock climbing club
  4. Managing the Panther Den, a multi-purpose movement room that includes a traversing wall. Responsibilities include:
    1. Supervising maintenance and inspection of the rock wall in collaboration with the Browning facilities team
    2. Routesetting in support of the program
    3. Provide rock wall training for other Browning faculty and staff
    4. Supervising Middle School recess when it is held in the space
  5. Developing and implementing an inspiring curriculum in conjunction with department members
  6. Using Browning’s Target-Focused Teaching and studentship methods to ensure student growth and alignment
  7. Creating strong relationships with students built on Browning’s core values of honesty, dignity, curiosity, and purpose
  8. Collaborating as a professional, collegial, and inspirational member of the department
  9. Participating in professional development to grow the self, department, and school
  10. Implementing supervisory duties as assigned, such as lunch, recess, or study hall coverage
  11. Setting a professional, collegial, and inspirational tone in the department
  12. Participating in department meetings
  13. Communicating with parents about curricular and coaching matters
  14. Heartily contributing to the school community

Key Competencies

In general, successful members of the Browning faculty are:

  • Champions of boys -- They believe in and love the expansive potential in boys.
  • Relationship-oriented -- They actively build meaningful relationships with students and families.
  • Purpose-driven -- They are inquiry-minded, curious and resourceful in finding solutions and growth opportunities.
  • Dignity-seeking -- They seek to address students and their needs with a dignity-oriented lens and engage in the deep work of creating belonging in the classroom and school community.
  • Can-do collaborators -- They seek collaboration and listen deeply to others, and they believe that a can-do attitude allows a team to accomplish more.

A successful K-12 PE teacher will collaborate well with others, delight in the content and pedagogy of teaching PE, maintain a high level of connection to and belief in the students, and contribute meaningfully to meeting Browning’s mission, as well as other strategic plans and goals. Communicating clearly and consistently with students, families, and fellow department members is of the utmost importance.

Those interested in the position should address their résumé and cover letter to Lauck Blake, K-8 PE Department Chair, and submit their application via this link.
