Job Description - Library Clerk (Part-Time/26 Hours Per Week/TMRS)

Starting Hourly Rate: $16.59


(26 Hours/Week)


MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK SATURDAYS


AND TWO EVENINGS PER WEEK 


 


Part-time library staff member will assist library patrons in the use of library materials and services, including reference and referral, homework help, computer help, reader’s advisor, and library events and programs. Library Clerks will also assist Librarians with ongoing projects and outreach.


EXAMPLES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED:



  • Check in and shelve library materials, read and straighten shelves and process new materials prior to shelving.

  • Assist patrons locating information in books, periodicals, and online.

  • Assist patrons with use of library computers, including Windows Office programs, the Internet and use of the circulation system and catalog.

  • Issue library cards to patrons.

  • Take in fees at the service desk, answer questions and assist with patrons with their accounts.

  • Generally assist patrons with use of the library and be available to assist full-time staff with various tasks and projects as needed.

  • Perform other tasks as needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



  • Ability to support the mission of the public library with regard to intellectual freedom and confidentiality of patron records.

  • Familiarity with a computer work environment, including Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point.

  • Familiarity with Polaris automated circulation and catalog systems and/or ability to learn them.

  • Abilities to alphabetize and to understand and learn Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC).

  • Good people skills, ability to work with patrons and coworkers, ability and willingness to accept supervision and training.

  • Ability to stoop and to lift 30 pounds.


REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:



  • High school graduation or equivalent


DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:



  • College courses in related field


ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS:


The physical activity of this position



  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.

  • Particularly for sustained periods of time.

  • Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

  • Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.

  • Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

  • Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

  • Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.

  • Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.


The physical requirements of this position



  • Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.


The visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception, and field vision.



  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
