Job Summary:
Under the immediate supervision of the Facility Manager/Beach Manager, the Beach Lifeguard is responsible for performing various duties to prepare the beach for the demands of patrons and assist with the daily beach operations. The Beach lifeguard is responsible for performing the responsibilities as outlined in this analysis. They work in groups of a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 8 lifeguards. They are a part-time employee working from 2 - 30 hours a week. Work shifts are variable, with an average 6-hour shift, but may be as long as 10 hours, with extended breaks within this period. Work is performed at a self-controlled pace but may vary depending on the job's demands.
The Beach Lifeguard must participate in 15-30-minute daily training sessions to demonstrate knowledge or ability to perform work activities. This can be verbal or physical and covers all aspects of the described essential functions.
Qualifications:
Required Knowledge:
Strong understanding and working knowledge of lifeguarding principles. Knowledge of Park District activities and operations. Ability to assist other staff effectively and exercise good judgment in dealing with the general public.
Required Skills:
Demonstrate strong swimming skills, including the ability to swim 550 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes without using their arms, and swim 20 yards while retrieving and holding a 10-pound brick from 12 feet of water. Dependability, flexibility, strong safety awareness, and sound judgment are essential. The individual must also be adept at understanding and following rules and instructions and reading, writing, and organizing materials effectively.

Pay Scale:
This is a seasonal part-time, non-exempt (hourly) position. The intended starting pay for this position is $16 per hour, with a full pay scale ranging from $16 per hour to $20 per hour.
Final compensation will be determined in good faith based on an evaluation of the candidate's qualifications, experience, and the recommendation of the Assistant Director of Recreation and Facilities, or the Deputy Director/Director of Recreation and Facilities.
