Description

We are seeking a part-time Literature Teacher to guide students in grades 3–8 through the timeless works of Western civilization. The ideal candidate will have a deep love for classical literature, a heart for student formation, and a commitment to teaching from a Catholic worldview.

This position focuses on reading, discussing, and delighting in rich stories that shape the imagination and character of children in their formative years.


Requirements

Curriculum & Instruction

  •  Teach literature to students in grades 3–8, using a classical approach that emphasizes close reading, moral imagination, and the enduring truths found in great books.
  •  Guide students through a wide range of age-appropriate classical texts, including fables, myths, fairy tales, Scripture stories, historical narratives, and great novels.
  •  Use Socratic discussion and guided questioning to help students think deeply, speak clearly, and listen attentively.
  •  Foster an appreciation for literary beauty, noble characters, and virtuous themes.

Classroom Culture

  •  Create a joyful, respectful, and orderly classroom rooted in a love for truth and virtue.
  •  Nurture habits of attention, wonder, and gratitude appropriate to both the grammar and logic stages.
  •  Cultivate a shared love for reading and thoughtful conversation.

Student Formation

  •  Use literature as a means of forming the moral imagination and inspiring virtue.
  •  Encourage students to reflect on characters, choices, and moral lessons within a Catholic context.
  •  Integrate prayer, reflection, and Catholic values into the classroom rhythm.

Assessment & Communication

  •  Assess student understanding through reading comprehension, narration, discussion, and short reflective responses.
  •  Provide feedback that supports both intellectual and moral development.
  •  Maintain regular communication with parents and adhere to school policies.

Collaboration & Professional Growth

  •  Coordinate with fellow Grammar and Logic School teachers to ensure curriculum cohesion.
  •  Participate in occasional faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and school liturgies.
  •  Continue personal growth in classical education and Catholic formation.

Education & Experience

  •  Bachelor’s degree in Literature, Education, Humanities, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  •  Prior teaching experience, especially in a classical or Catholic school, is highly valued.
  •  Familiarity with classical literature and children’s classics is preferred.

Skills & Dispositions

  •  Love for literature and storytelling, especially from the Western canon.
  •  Strong communication skills and comfort with discussion-based learning.
  •  Practicing Catholic committed to the faith and moral teaching of the Church.
  •  Ability to manage a multi-grade classroom with clarity, kindness, and consistency.

Preferred

  •  Familiarity with classical education or willingness to be trained in its principles and practices.
  •  Knowledge of age-appropriate classical texts and how to lead students in guided reading and reflection.

  •  Deep commitment to the Catholic faith and joy in sharing it with children.
  •  A heart for nurturing students’ souls and imaginations through the great books.
  •  Humility, professionalism, and a collaborative spirit.

Physical Demands

The physical requirements of this position are typical for classroom instruction, including standing, walking, sitting, and occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds). Reasonable accommodations will be made as needed.
