Department: Mohs Micrographic Surgery Laboratory
Position Summary
The Mohs Histotechnologist is responsible for the preparation, processing, and staining of frozen skin tissue specimens during Mohs micrographic surgery. This role ensures high-quality histological slides for same-day diagnosis, supports the Mohs surgeon in real-time during surgery, and upholds strict safety, accuracy, and regulatory compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities
Tissue Processing & Slide Preparation
- Receive, label, and accession skin tissue specimens from Mohs surgery cases.
- Properly orient, embed, and freeze tissue specimens to maintain accurate margins.
- Cut high-quality frozen sections using a cryostat for same-day microscopic evaluation.
- Perform hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and other stains as needed.
- Cover slip slides and deliver them to the Mohs surgeon in a timely manner.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Maintain precision in tissue mapping, labeling, and documentation to ensure accurate margin analysis.
- Inspect slides for quality and troubleshoot sectioning or staining issues.
- Adhere to CLIA, CAP, and OSHA standards for laboratory safety and operation.
- Maintain and calibrate cryostat and staining equipment; perform routine maintenance.
Collaboration & Workflow
- Communicate closely with the Mohs surgeon and clinical staff to ensure efficient case turnover.
- Assist in maintaining proper surgical case flow to minimize patient wait times.
- Maintain adequate inventory of lab supplies and stains.
- Support team training and continuing education.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Experience: Prior Mohs or frozen section histology experience highly preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Expertise in frozen section microtomy and tissue orientation for margin control.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to microscopic detail.
- Ability to work efficiently in a high-paced surgical setting.
- Proficiency with laboratory information systems (LIS) and basic computer skills.
