About the Role: Number Concepts Tutor

Heart Math Tutoring is seeking part-time tutors to lead small group math sessions where they will deliver high-quality, in-person instruction to help students build foundational math skills and confidence using our intervention curriculum adapted from Kathy Richardson’s Developing Number Concepts. Tutors will work directly with elementary students during the school day, using structured lessons and hands-on materials provided by Heart. In addition to delivering instruction, tutors will assess student progress and help create a positive and supportive learning environment. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with children, values educational equity, and is excited to make a direct impact through small group tutoring. Tutors will collaborate with school staff and Heart Math Tutoring team members to ensure students are receiving the help they need to succeed.

About the Organization: Heart Math Tutoring

We believe tutors can be a powerful resource for students when given tools and support, and we believe all children can understand math at high levels. We focus on students who may not have resources to access private tutoring and who qualify as “economically disadvantaged” in school records. To date, 97% of Heart students have met program growth goals, and over 90% of teachers annually report that students show an increase in enthusiasm and/or confidence towards academics as a result of the program

Job Responsibilities: Key responsibilities are listed below.

• Oversee 50 – 60 students’ growth in math skills and enthusiasm for academics;
• Liaise with teachers, school staff, and families. 

Tasks will include but are not limited to: 

• Become an expert on Heart curriculum and assessments;
• Communicate with school staff regarding curriculum, students, and schedule issues; 
• Communicate with families regarding student and program updates; 
• Design and maintain schedule of students using Salesforce; 
• Coordinate and complete student assessments;
• Manage tutoring materials;
• Attend team meetings and quarterly professional development trainings;
• Report various operational information to Program Manager; 
• Partner with Heart team in providing and receiving feedback, with the goal of aiding the organization’s efforts to establish a strong, scalable program model. 

Tutors will also be asked to play a supporting role in:

• Coordination of space and time logistics with school staff; and
• Act as an ambassador of Heart to personal networks, the Charlotte community, and school site. 

Typical Work Week

• A tutor will typically work 12-16 hours a week with hours within a school day schedule. In all, approximately 6 – 8 hours are designated for tutoring at your school site, and a tutor will spend approximately 6 hours per week on check-ins, scheduling, communications, and computer work.

A person who is successful in this role will likely have all or most of the skills/background below, which are listed in order of importance. 

• Strong belief that all students can learn and have the potential to perform at or above grade level 
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills 
• Ability/willingness to quickly build expertise in teaching, learning, and assessing
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Experience working with low-income population
• Desire to work with elementary-aged students 
• Computer skills and/or ability/willingness to learn programs including but not limited to MS 365 Suite (Outlook, Calendar, Contacts, Teams, Power Point, Word, Excel, etc.), Salesforce and other browser-based database platforms, file sharing systems (Sharepoint, OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive), communication platforms (Pencil Spaces for virtual tutoring, MS Teams and Slack), and video-conferencing platforms (MS Teams, Zoom and Google Meets). Must also be able/willing to utilize authenticator apps and other cyber security applications.

Compensation: This is an hourly, part-time paid position. Tutors will be paid $20 an hour. Tutors are expected to work for 28 weeks with 3 weeks of paid training (36 hours).  

Hiring Timeline: Interviews and decisions will be made starting in August. Training will begin the week of September 15th. Tutoring will begin in October.
