Description

 Job Summary St. Louis Catholic Church, a large, vibrant parish in Waco, TX, seeks a part-time organist to play for Vigil and Sunday Masses, and other scheduled liturgies during the Liturgical year. The organist/pianist will collaborate with keyboardists and vocalists already on staff. 

Ministerial Character
The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish (St. Louis Catholic Church and Bishop Louis Reicher Catholic School - Waco, Texas) which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ's mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or laypeople). He shares with them his mission entrusts various responsibilities to them and expects that they accomplish the mission according to the parish's core values.

Positions employed at St. Louis Catholic Church and Bishop Louis Reicher Catholic School - Waco, Texas help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in, the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

Essential Duties 

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school.
  • Acts as a witness to the Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed.
  • Support and adhere to the Standards of Conduct and policies and procedures of the school.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters.
  • Accompany and lead music at Masses and other parish Liturgies as needed.
  • Learn and rehearse new music.
  • Rehearse with choir or small musical groups.
  • Collaborate with Director of Sacred Music and other staff musicians.
  • Rehearse with cantors/psalmists/scola for Mass.
  • Occasional arranging of music.
  • Occasional leading of rehearsals and sectionals.
  • Other duties as needed.

Requirements

  

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church. 
  • Proficiency in playing organ and piano.
  • Familiarity with Roman Catholic liturgy and liturgical practices.
  • Good skills in sight reading, registration, improvisation, transposition, playing organ and piano in various styles, reading open score and lead sheets.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Degree in Music or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Degree in Liturgy, Sacred Music, Pastoral Studies or equivalent are a plus.
  • Experience in accompanying and leading music for the Roman Catholic liturgy

Certifications and Training:

  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period.

Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, evenings, and weekends as required. Compensation is paid via stipend to be paid bi-weekly.
