Parks Crew Lead

The Parks Crew Lead is a professional employee who is responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the upkeep, maintenance, and enhancement of the Borough’s environmental programming, parks, and natural spaces. This position will also assist with the stormwater management program, general cleanliness of the downtown spaces, and support for Borough-sponsored events. The Parks Crew Lead position supervises and trains the Borough Parks Crew and leads day-to-day operations.

The position is part-time seasonal, hours shift seasonally and may range from early morning to late evening. Normal schedule is Monday through Friday, with weekend support as needed. Employees may work 10-30 hours a week with flexible scheduling but must meet a required minimum of 10 hours a week.

Roles and Responsibilities

Team Supervision and Training

1. Supervise day-to-day operations of the Parks Crew under the direction of supervisor.


2. Facilitate the training of new and current employees and ensure that all crew members are able to complete required duties.

Parks and Tree Maintenance

1. Maintain trees within the Borough’s public parks and other areas as appropriate through routine maintenance. This will also include assistance with new tree plantings.


2. Ensure the cleanliness, upkeep, and maintenance of all park areas and associated amenities.


3. Maintain upkeep of community garden spaces.


4. Properly care for specialized and ornamental plantings in parks.


5. Operate all equipment pertaining to care and maintenance of parks.


6. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Downtown Mechanicsburg Cleanliness

1. Inspect and maintain cleanliness of downtown areas, sidewalks, and Borough Park spaces.


2. Care for downtown plantings within public spaces.


3. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Event Support and Cleanliness

1. Ensure cleanliness of public spaces before and after events.


2. Collaborate with Recreation and Events Committee to support during Borough-sponsored events.


3. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Municipal Stormwater

1. Perform all actions necessary to ensure compliance with the Borough’s MS4 permitting requirements. 


2. Perform inlet and basin inspections as needed during the year.


3. Assist sewer and highway crews with cleaning out debris from inlets.


4. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to regularly report to the job at the assigned times and perform assigned duties. 

Ability to work independently or in a team environment as needed. 

Ability to follow detailed instructions and perform multiple tasks simultaneously. 

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written form. 

Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including the public and the residents.

Ability to adhere to all Borough rules, regulations, policies, safety, and emergency procedures.

Physical Requirements

This is mostly active outdoor work. As appropriate, employee will work in all weather conditions. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time and be able to lift 60-pound objects. 

Minimum Education and Experience

A bachelor's degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or another related field, OR an equivalent combination of experience and training is preferred but not required.

Experience in Public Works, Park Maintenance, and team supervision is preferred but not required.
