POSITION: Sign Language Instructor, Part time (not to exceed 19 hours per week)

Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, multidisabled, and their families. As a Sign Language Instructor, you will be at the forefront of this mission, directly teaching American Sign Language (ASL) classes to empower individuals and bridge communication gaps within our communities. This instructional leadership role will actively design, develop, and implement standardized ASL curricula and instructional materials that drive consumer success.
HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT
To maintain our high-quality educational standards across the region, you will ensure strict adherence to approved curricula for the full duration of each course, guaranteeing program consistency and alignment with course objectives. Working closely with regional leadership, you will also spearhead targeted ASL training initiatives and special projects.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Two (2) years’ experience working with Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals
Sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED as rated on the SCPI
Must meet suitability/background requirements for employment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
ASLTA (American Sign Language Teachers Association) certified
State of Alabama Interpreter License
RID certification and/or NAD Level 4 or 5
Instruction & Classroom Management
Instructional Delivery: Execute high-quality American Sign Language (ASL) instruction strictly following the approved curriculum for the full duration of each course to ensure program consistency.
Learning Environment: Implement dynamic instructional strategies to proactively manage the classroom, keeping students engaged while ensuring lesson plans are executed smoothly.
Space Optimization: Arrange and optimize the classroom environment to be highly conducive to learning, ensuring the space is restored properly after each class meeting.
Curriculum & Compliance
Curriculum Development: Actively design and develop innovative ASL curricula and instructional materials that align with program goals and support consumer success.
Compliance & Approvals: Facilitate the formal review and approval process for all instructional curricula with the Regional Director, OFS Executive Director, and Chief Adult Programs Officer.
Administration & Communication
Administrative Documentation: Accurately record and submit essential paperwork on time, including student attendance, progress reports, student registration, and payroll documentation.
Professional Engagement: Maintain highly respectful and professional communication with all consumers, staff, and community members participating in the program.
Collaboration & Special Projects
Cross-Functional Teamwork: Work closely with the Regional Director and campus staff to support overarching organizational and program goals.
Special Projects: Support and execute targeted ASL training initiatives and special projects as assigned by leadership.
SKILLS AND CERTIFICATIONS
ASL Expertise: Possess thorough, advanced knowledge and proven hands-on experience using and teaching American Sign Language (ASL).
Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
