Part-Time Assistant Mechanic

Elk Grove Village, Illinois, (pop. 33,127), a strategically located, progressive community that is home to the largest consolidated business park in North America, is seeking a dynamic, detailed and skills-oriented candidate for the position of Part-Time Assistant Mechanic in the Public Works Department.  Elk Grove Village is located in Cook and DuPage Counties adjacent to O’Hare International Airport and is home to approximately 3,600 businesses, located in its 5.4 square mile Business Park.  

The Public Works Department maintains Village-owned property, infrastructure, and equipment. It consists of the General Operations Division, the Utilities Division, and the Engineering Division. The Department maintains water and sewer utilities, public streets and rights-of-way, urban forestry, land, engineering, facilities, and fleet services.

The Part-Time Assistant Mechanic performs skilled work in the inspections, maintenance and repair of automotive, construction and other related municipal equipment under the general supervision of the Fleet Services Administrator. Municipal equipment includes ambulances, fire apparatus, aerial trucks, dump trucks and snow and ice control equipment to name a few.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Operates, maintains, and repairs fleet vehicles and equipment.


• Performs preventative maintenance activities, including fluid changes, lubrication, tire changes and repairs, wiper blades, light bulb replacement and engine tune-ups, cleaning, and shop organization.


• Repairs brakes, suspensions, and exhaust systems. Reviews vehicle trouble codes and makes minor repairs under the supervision of a mechanic or foreman.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a high school graduate or have a GED. Good physical condition and strong mechanical aptitude. A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of various vehicles and equipment and automotive vocational training is desired. This is a physically demanding and semi-skilled shop labor position. Ability to work three full workdays per week.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Possess a valid Class D (or higher) State of Illinois Driver’s License and a safe driving record. Required to have Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement or obtain license within six (6) months of hire.

HOURS OF WORK:  25 hours per week         OPENING DATE: June 12 2025

STARTING WAGE:  $30.72 per hour            CLOSING DATE: July 3, 2025 at 5:00 pm

This position qualifies for an Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension.
