Description

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for pre-analytical specimen processing that includes reception, extraction, storage, and documenting. Should only perform those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and that are within the individual’s skill level as determined by education, training or experience, and technical abilities.

· Perform moderate to high complexity testing under the on-site direct supervision of a laboratory supervisor.

· Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, and maintaining records of daily performance.

· Prepare patient’s specimens for qualitative and quantitative testing, including accessioning, sorting and extraction procedures.

· Operate and maintain basic analytical lab equipment necessary for testing.

· Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies and document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance, per qualification and training.

· Perform proficiency testing and maintain records supporting samples were tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

· Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem following the laboratory’s policies AND notify the appropriate supervisor.

· Assist senior management to comply with quality assurance programs.

· Communicate with clinical sites on issues that arise during specimen accessioning.

· Keep inventory of supplies and stocks, and maintain technical records.

· Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory by ensuring the equipment is clean and functioning properly, alert supervisor when troubleshooting is required.

· Comply with all laboratory safety procedures.

· Adhere to and uphold all applicable federal and state compliance regulations as well as NSPC’s Code of Conduct and Employee Handbook, compliance policies and procedures, and applicable healthcare fraud, waste and abuse laws.

· All other duties, as assigned.

Level of activities authorized to perform:

· Samples reception/ preparation/ extraction (independent)

· Immunoassay analyzer operation and maintenance (independent)

· Immunoassay analyzer troubleshooting (supervisor review)

Requirements

· Bachelor or Associates degree in Chemistry, Biology or Laboratory science

· Three months of laboratory training or experience in moderate or high complexity lab

· Knowledge of basic laboratory bench techniques is required (e.g. pipetting, operating basic lab equipment)

· Knowledge of basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, Acrobat and Web search)
