Job Description - Patient Care Tech

Description

Assists with basic patient care based on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under the direct supervision of the registered nurse. Maintains an environment that is prepared for patient care. Assists as directed in providing care for patients with various types of illness or trauma requiring emergency attention.

This is a PRN (as needed) position.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent
  • Completion of a nurse aide training course or currently enrolled in at least the second semester of an accredited school of nursing
  • BLS required
  • Completion of a medical terminology course required

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age.
  • Provides care appropriate to condition and age of patient, including pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.
  • Provides patient care that meets the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient within the Nurse Tech’s scope of practice.
  • Assists with patient admissions, discharge and transfers.
  • Provides morning and/or evening care which may include bed bath, shower, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning overbed table and bedside stand, straightening room and other general care as necessary throughout the shift.
  • Provides general nursing care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan, commode and ambulating patients.
  • Prepares patients for meals; serves and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds patients if necessary.
  • Distribute drinking water and snacks to patients as applicable.
  • Answers patients' call lights, anticipates patients' needs and makes rounds of assigned patients.
  • Transports patients to various departments for ordered tests/procedures.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform procedures within Nurse Tech’s scope of practice per state law.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, blood pressure and intake-output.
  • Reports patient complaint of pain to supervising RN and LVN.
  • Observes patient's mental and physical conditions, reports any changes to supervising RN and LVN.
  • Knowledgeable of sterile techniques and infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Communicates in a clear and concise manner to RNs and medical staff.
  • Complete all documentation in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively with all supervisors, physicians, co-workers and patients.
  • Competencies are met and documented.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred
  • Proficiency with computer skills including Microsoft Office applications and electronic health records systems
  • Willingness to adapt to change and support new technologies as well as policies and procedures in a positive manner

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • High-stress environment
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions
  • Pushing and pulling heavy objects
  • Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients
  • Position requires heavy lifting and carrying up to and over 100 lbs. 
  • Position requires reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing
  • Mental demands include alertness, analytic ability, memory, concentration, judgment, initiative, precision, creativity and communication.
