Job Description:The Patient Education Specialist is for responsible for the selection, production, and oversight of high- quality patient education across the Essentia Health geography. The Patient Education Specialist is responsible for all mediums of patient education resources (print, electronic, and video) The Patient Education Specialist writes, edits, and produces patient materials that represent best clinical practice and the excellent care provided by Essentia Health. The Patient Education Specialist provides consultative services to clinical and non-clinical departments as well as to multidisciplinary teams to ensure that all patient communication ensures comprehensive and patient-centered materials and meets nationally recognized standards of health literacy.
Education Qualifications:Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Health Education, Communication, Nursing, or other health-related field
Required Qualifications:
- 1 year of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in health education
- Experience working with clinical caregivers as a patient education expert, consultant, and project manager
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintains up to date knowledge on best practices in health literacy and patient-centered communication
- Advocates for health literacy principles in all aspects of patient communication.
- Coordinates and supports the clinical reference system within Epic
- Manages the production of written patient education, including research, writing, editing, design, layout, and proofreading
- Manages production schedules and deadlines
- Oversees written communication to patients, including patient instructions, questionnaires, consent forms, and letters to explain Medicare, insurance, and payment options
- Ensures that patient publications meet Essentia Health’s policies related to health literacy, branding, formatting, medical best practice, exceptional patient experience, regulatory requirements, and copyright law
- Provides project management and consultative services to meet system goals for patient education
- Supports standardization and integration of materials into clinical workflow, convening system-wide workgroups and working to build consensus
- Coordinates the translation process of written materials in collaboration with interpreter services
Remote/ Hybrid Nature:
- This position is predominantly remote, however may require occasional onsite work for projects, presentations, and training as needed.
- Candidate must live within Essentia Service areas (North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin)
Candidates with the following credentials may be considered for a Senior Patient Education Specialist role:
- 3+ years of related Health Education experience
- Master’s degree in Education, Health Education, Communication, Nursing, or other health-related field
- Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and/or certification by the Institute for Healthcare Advancement (IHA)
Licensure/Certification Qualifications:- No certification/licensure required
- CHES, IHA, or similar certification or willingness to obtain such certification within 2 years is preferred.

The approximate base compensation range is posted, but the actual offer will reflect our total compensation and benefits package. The offer will be determined by a number of factors including the selected candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, FTE, as well as internal equity among our team.
