Job Title: Per Diem Sterilization Technician
Department/Location: Operations 
Reports to: Dental Practice Manager 
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary
A sterilization technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of healthcare facilities by properly sterilizing medical and dental instruments, equipment, and supplies. They are responsible for following strict protocols and standards to decontaminate, disinfect, and sterilize reusable items, thereby preventing the transmission of infectious diseases and maintaining a clean and sanitary environment for patients and healthcare providers.

Duties and Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:

Decontamination and Cleaning:
  • Receive used medical and dental instruments, equipment, and supplies from clinical areas and prepare them for sterilization.
  • Disassemble complex instruments and devices as needed and manually clean them using appropriate detergents, brushes, and equipment to remove organic and inorganic debris.
Sterilization and Disinfection:
  • Operate sterilization equipment such as autoclaves, ultrasonic cleaners, and chemical sterilizers to sterilize instruments and equipment according to established protocols and manufacturer instructions.
  • Monitor sterilization cycles, including time, temperature, and pressure parameters, to ensure proper sterilization and effectiveness in killing microorganisms.
  • Preform routine maintenance and quality control checks on sterilization equipment to maintain functionality and compliance with regulatory standards.
Packaging and Sterile Storage:
  • Package sterilized instruments and supplies suing appropriate wrapping materials and techniques to maintain sterility until their intended use.
  • Label sterilized items with expiration dates and other relevant information to facilitate inventory management and traceability.
  • Store sterilized items in designated areas under controlled conditions to prevent contamination and ensure their readiness for sue when needed.
Inventory Management and Documentation:
  • Adhere to infection control protocols, regulatory guidelines, and industry best practices related to sterilization and decontamination processes.
  • Participate in training programs and continuing education activities to stay updated on new technologies, techniques, and regulations relevant to sterilization practices.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or incidents related to sterilization processes to appropriate supervisions or managers.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certification in sterile processing or central service technology preferred.
  • Knowledge of infection control principles, sterilization methods, and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, CDC, AAMI).
  • Experience working in a healthcare or dental setting with exposure to sterilization procedures and practices.
  • Attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to follow standard operating procedures and safety protocols.
  • Physical ability to lift and move heavy objects, stand for extended periods, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with healthcare team members.

The employee may need to travel to healthcare practices.
