Job Description - Pharmacy Tech (PRN)

Description

The Pharmacy Technician assists Pharmacist with daily operations of the Pharmacy department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs a variety of duties necessary for the care of Jackson Parish Hospital patients, under the supervision of the pharmacy manager.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. 
  • Attends meetings and educational in-services to maintain professional competency. Obtains appropriate hospital-specific education and training when necessary.
  • Follows departmental policy and procedure regarding medications to reduce medication errors.
  • Adheres to all Jackson Parish Hospital policies, procedures, safety plans, and all standards imposed by regulatory organizations.
  • Adheres to department and hospital dress code policy and procedure.  
  • Assists the Pharmacist in providing medication, drug information and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital staff.
  • Accurately prepares intravenous solutions and admixtures.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and reorders them accordingly.
  • Prepares select reports.
  • Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.
  • Assists the Pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly. Must be able to identify and understand that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, and know to consult with the pharmacist if any doubts or questions arise.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Maintains Pharmacy Services in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs any other duty as assigned by supervisor.
  • Recognizes inappropriate dosing based on available dosage forms for various age groups.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill ensuring that pharmaceutical preparations are sterile, properly packaged, labeled and stored, and not outdated.
  • Ensures compliance with USP 

Low-risk compounding:

    The applicable media-fill test will be performed and passed annually, after the initial training and media-fill test is 

     completed and passed

Medium-risk compounding:

     The applicable media-fill test will be performed and passed annually, after the initial training and media-fill test is              

      completed and passed

  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Stock Omnicells as required.
  • Pulls expired meds from pharmacy inventory and all Omnicells, crash carts, and tackle boxes.
  • Updating NDC numbers and prices of all items in the system.
  • Fill medication orders for all hospital-based clinics.
  • Performing annual inventory of entire pharmacy.
  • Patient Assistance Program
  1. Completion of application forms by gathering patient information
  2. Retrieving prescriptions for patients and obtaining signatures from doctors to complete initial paperwork process
  3. Notifying patients of eligibility status and updating them when medications arrive
  4. Faxing or mailing paperwork to drug manufacturers 

Requirements

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of a nationally accredited pharmacy technician training program required 
  • Hospital pharmacy experience preferred

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current Pharmacy Technician certification or licensure in the State of Louisiana 

LANGUAGE and PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Strong written and verbal skills.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work alone or with minimal supervision.
  • Professional/Courteous rapport with patients, families, co-workers, physicians and visitors.
  • Ability to work under and handle stress in an appropriate manner.
  • Ability to work long hours between breaks and meals, if necessary.  
  • Basic computer competency.  

MACHINERY/TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to operate all pharmacy related equipment, including, but not limited to: Omnicell or other automated pharmacy systems, Cactus, IV Laminar Flow Hood, Auto-Print Unit Dosing System, Morris & Dickson wholesaler website for medication ordering. Also, nursing call system, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, computer, and printer.
