Job Description - Produce Clerk

There is one part-time hourly position, approximately 15 - 20 hours per week and with the ability to be somewhat flexible to help fill in.  May require a weekend shift.



Goal:     To provide excellent customer service through presenting abundant, fresh produce displays and having helpful interactions with all shoppers.



SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES



Assists with the daily tasks in the Produce Department including: prepping produce, stocking and receiving orders, culling produce to maintain quality, ensuring accurate signage, creating displays and following produce handling guidelines.  In addition, this position answers customer questions and helps customers in their selection or ordering of produce.  


 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


 


Stocking:



  • Prep, stock, rotate, cull product in keeping with all quality standards & directions provided by department manager and organic handling standards.

  • Handle all items as specific to their needs, in order to maintain freshness and quality. Reduce product loss (shrink) by properly rotating stock and culling poor product on the sales floor. 

  • Follow all Organic standards pertaining to the handling, storage, and signage of merchandise and supplies.


           


Customer Service:



  • Assist customers to find desired product and answer questions about product quality and uses. Take customer special orders as needed and process them according to current procedures.

  • Update and add to your knowledge on an on-going basis.

  • Provide information about merchandise, location of products, in-store promotions, and Member services.

  • Stock all customer supplies in an orderly, accessible manner on sales floor.


 


Marketing and Merchandising:



  • Set up demos in an appealing manner, with clear signage. Maintain Health Code safety standards of all demo items.  Proactively sample products to customers, while engaging them in sales conversation. 

  • Verify that all product prices and signage are current, accurate and presentable. Take preventative or corrective action to ensure that all barcodes and PLUs ring correctly at register and report any errors to buyers or MOD’s. Help cashiers to be aware of similar products that are available.

  • Follow merchandising plan established by department manager. Actively contribute fresh, creative ideas to increase the appeal of product presentation (as needed.)


 


Inventory Control:



  • Assist with the ordering of product, as assigned.

  • Receive orders as required and perform a quality check to ensure all product is of good quality before accepting it from a vendor.

  • Verify that all cold case and cooler temperatures are within Health Code safety ranges. Ensure cleanliness of cold cases and dry racks, including baskets, buckets, shelf liner, etc. 

  • Maintain organization of all backstock areas, coolers and product.

  • Understand and perform proper handling of perishable goods.



Other Tasks:



  • Perform other tasks assigned by supervisor and assist storewide when needed and/or requested by management.

  • Participate in quarterly inventory, as needed.

        Language Skills:



  • Ability to extend excellent customer service customers, staff, vendors, and community members.

  • Read and interpret documents written in English such as procedure manuals and signage.

  • Each shift writes daily notes summaries written in English.

  • Proper and professional use of the phone system.


        Computer Skills:



  • Sufficient computer skills that will allow use, in a proficient manner, all Company-issued software programs relating to the position.


        Reasoning Ability:



  • Ability to handle multiple demands and pay attention to detail.

  • Stay focused and on-task.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.


        Desirable Skills:      



  • Knowledge or organic gardening and/or cooking.

  • Ability to communicate in Spanish.



PHYSICAL JOB DESCRIPTION



Typical Working Conditions:


Environment is generally indoors walking or standing for prolonged periods of time on concrete floors.   The building temperature is controlled although often cooler than the rest of the store working near refrigeration units.   Work may be performed in the walk-in refrigerator, requiring a coat or jacket.  It is occasionally necessary to go outside and will be exposed to outdoor temperatures.



Equipment Used:


This position requires the ability to use the required tools and supplies for cleaning, trimming, or stocking produce including scissors, produce knife, twist ties, work gloves, stepladders, 4-wheel stocking carts, and box cutters. Produce stockers must also have notepaper and writing supplies while working. Employees may wear protective clothing as necessary, including cutting gloves, boots, heavy aprons, etc.  and will be working in and around refrigerated units.



Essential Physical Tasks:


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. The employee is constantly required to use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Work performed includes stocking and merchandising shelves, which includes lifting and/or moving up to 60 pounds repetitively and above shoulder height. There may be the frequent need to squat or kneel and push or pull weighted cards. There may be the occasional to rare need to climb or crawl.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
