POSITION      Program Manager, 

     Part-Time not to exceed 19 hours per week, 3 days per week

                       Alabama Freedom Center for the Blind 

LOCATION:   Decatur, AL 

 

 

ABOUT ALABAMA INSTITUTE FOR DEAF AND BLIND (AIDB)

Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind and multidisabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 30,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.

 

Our services literally span a lifetime including five campuses in Talladega, ten regional centers located in Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega, Tuscaloosa, Muscle Shoals, Opelika and Decatur with programs that range from early and senior intervention, traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings and a manufacturing facility that is the state’s largest employer of adults who are Blind and Deaf.

 

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

In this pivotal leadership role, you will direct day-to-day operations, including budgeting, payroll, procurement, and facility management, while ensuring excellent outcomes for students with sensory loss. You will provide strategic oversight and mentorship to a diverse team of instructional, residential, clerical, and contract staff, driving professional development, recruitment, and rigorous performance evaluations. Driven by a commitment to continuous improvement, you will manage student enrollment, attendance, and holistic program planning to ensure successful participant rehabilitation. Serving as a key member of the leadership team, you will contribute to AIDB and AFCB strategic planning, marketing, and public relations, while actively representing the organization at state and national conferences to fully establish the AFCB as a premier regional and national model. 

 

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Rehabilitation Teaching, Social Work or human service field.

  • One (1) year experience working in a Center that fully embraces the Structured Discovery methodology and philosophy and successful completion of six-to-nine months of training within a Structured Discovery Center. 

  • Three (3) years relevant experience in supervision and building/leading a team. 

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Rehabilitation Teaching, Social Work or human service field. 

  • Five (5) years of relevant and recent experience in Administration or other related professional supervisory experience. 

  • Five (5) years of experience in building and leading a team. 

 

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

Program Management & Strategic Leadership

  • Direct and Manage the Program: Oversee the daily operations of the Alabama Freedom Center for the Blind (AFCB), ensuring high-quality service delivery across all core areas: Orientation and Mobility/Travel, Assistive Technology, Braille, and Home Management to include paid work experiences and Job Development.

  • Philosophy Integration: Apply a deep knowledge of the Structured Discovery philosophy to evaluate, enhance, and direct all aspects of the training program and curriculum.

  • Administrative Oversight: Manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, navigating ambiguity and executing sound crisis management protocols when necessary.

  • Executive Collaboration: Serve as an active, contributing member of the executive leadership team, collaborating on organizational strategy and administrative goals.

  • Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to federal statutes, rehabilitation laws, workforce development regulations, and educational administration guidelines, particularly those governing individuals with sensory loss.

Team Leadership & Staff Development

  • Supervise and Lead: Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of instructors, counselors, and support staff, fostering a collaborative and accountable work environment.

  • Performance Evaluation: Direct, manage, and evaluate staff performance, ensuring instructional methods align with Structured Discovery principles and organizational standards.

Stakeholder & Community Relations

  • Relationship Management: Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with staff, consumers, families, program graduates, and advisory groups.

  • Liaison Duties: Act as a primary liaison to peer Structured Discovery Programs and state agencies, specifically including the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS).

  • Advocacy & Inclusive Advocacy: Ensure all program decisions, actions, and policies reflect a profound respect for the value, cultures, and unique needs of individuals who are Blind, Deaf, DeafBlind and those with multiple disabilities. 

Mandatory On-the-Job Requirements (First 12 Months)

To remain in this position, the selected candidate must successfully complete the following benchmarks within the first year of employment:

  • Braille Competency: Achieve a minimum score of 90% on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment within the first twelve (12) months.

  • Specialized Training: Complete all mandated AIDB online training modules covering Deafness, Blindness, Visual Impairments, DeafBlindness, and Multiple Disabilities within the first twelve (12) months.

 

 

Salary:    PH-01 - $35.00
