Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) – Oncology & Infusion

Department: Specialty Clinic 

Reports To: Clinic Director

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 

Hours: 24-28/weeks

Shift: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Registered Nurse – Oncology & Infusion Nurse is a vital member of the outpatient care team, responsible for delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients with oncology conditions. This role combines the responsibilities of an oncology nurse with those of an infusion nurse, administering chemotherapy and other IV therapies in a clinic setting. The RN ensures safe and effective treatment, coordinates with providers, educates patients, and promotes a supportive environment for individuals undergoing cancer treatment and other infusion therapies. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and will adhere to all policies associated with this designation. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.   • Deliver direct patient care to oncology patients in accordance with the nursing process and standards of care
  • Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other cancer-related treatments safely and in compliance with protocols
  • Monitor patients for side effects and complications of treatment, intervening as necessary
  • Perform assessments, develop and revise individualized care plans, and document all care accurately in the electronic health record
  • Collaborate with oncologists, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members
  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, symptom management, and self-care
  • Provide emotional support and guidance to patients and families, recognizing the psychosocial impact of a cancer diagnosis
  • Maintain competency in oncology nursing practices, including continuing education and certifications as required
  • Follow infection control procedures and safety protocols, and ensure compliance with HIPAA and other relevant healthcare regulations.
  • Assess, monitor, and document the physical and emotional status of patients with oncology conditions
  • Provide nursing care and symptom management related to cancer diagnoses and treatments
  • Educate patients and their families about the disease process, treatment options, side effects, and follow-up care
  • Serve as a liaison between patients and providers, coordinating care plans and facilitating communication
  • Support patients through all phases of their cancer journey, offering emotional and psychosocial support
  • Prepare and administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biologics, blood products, and other infusion therapies in accordance with established protocols
  • Start and monitor IVs and central lines (e.g., ports, PICCs); ensure proper flushing, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Monitor for and respond to adverse drug reactions or infusion-related complications
  • Maintain competencies in oncology and infusion therapy through ongoing training
  • Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities
  • Assist with patient scheduling, prior authorizations, and care coordination as needed
  • Keep the infusion area stocked and prepared; conduct daily equipment and safety checks
  • Uphold infection control standards and HIPAA compliance at all times
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) to ensure compliance with regulations and standards
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and the handling of hazardous medications, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and closed-system transfer devices
  • Timely documentation according to the current Franklin County Medical Center's 'Timely Documentation Protocol' is required
  • Maintain confidentiality by protecting sensitive, proprietary, or confidential information.
  • Adhere to HIPAA privacy and security requirements
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required to maintain Infection Control Standards as set by the facility
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Must be able to hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergencies

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred.
  • Current License as a Registered Nurse in the state of Idaho
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification (ONS or equivalent) required or obtained within 6 months of hire
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN®) preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Experience in oncology and/or infusion nursing preferred
  • Familiarity with EMR systems and infusion protocols

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Expected to lift and utilize a full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, including heavy items or patients.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting and ambulating patients, as well as obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing and pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items or patients. 
  • Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended time
  • Must be able to access and navigate throughout the department within the organization's facilities
  • Ongoing need for the employee to see and read information labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify/operate equipment and supplies.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, etc

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • FCMC operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The operational needs of departments may require that you be available to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, to meet the needs of patients.
  • Potential exposure to blood, body tissue, fluids, contagious diseases, and hazardous waste.
  • Occasional exposure to bodily injury, loud/unpleasant noise, unpleasant odor, emotional or physical stress.  
  • May be required to work day or night in a confined environment or varying temperatures. 
  • The employee works in the hospital setting and occasionally takes ambulance transports to other facilities
  • May be required to travel to other facilities to obtain training/certification as necessary
