Job Description - Adjunct Phlebotomy Instructor - MCC

Job Summary



The primary duties for the successful candidate will be teaching Principles of Phlebotomy 
didactic and laboratory education for New River Community and Technical College to prepare 
students for entry-level positions as phlebotomists.



Campus locations- Mercer County Campus, day and evening classes.



Adjunct faculty members serve multiple roles as teachers, mentors, colleagues, and scholars. 
Adjunct faculty are expected to excel in classroom instruction and to fulfill various 
responsibilities related to their assigned teaching duties. 



Nature of Work



Provide didactic and laboratory education, in person and through distance learning.



Distinguishing Characteristics



Performs other functions as required or assigned. Also complies with all Policies and 
Standards.



Summary of Core Responsibilities:
• Possess thorough and accurate technical knowledge of current phlebotomy
practices and be able to convey that knowledge to students.
• Possess technical phlebotomy skills and competently teach those skills to the 
students.
• Coordinate clinical rotations with the Medical Laboratory Tecnician Program 
Director, and communicate effectively with clinical affiliates.
• Adhere to safety policies set forth by New River Community and Technical College.
• Demonstrate ability to relate and work effectively with students, peers and the 
public.
• Commit to the mission and objectives of New River Community and Technical 
College.
• Meet the academic demands of the program.
• Provide own transportation and be punctual and regular in attendance.
• Travel to various campus/clinical locations to teach, including evenings.
• Be accessible and responsive to students through e-mail, phone, or scheduled office 
hours or at other times. 
• Demonstrate typing and computer skills.
• Meet classes as scheduled.
• Evaluate student work and maintain accurate records of students’ academic 
standing.
• Provide students with constructive, encouraging, and corrective feedback in a timely 
manner.
• Direct and supervise student learning in the classroom and laboratory areas.
• Evaluate student performance weekly, at mid-term and at the end of the semester 
using the appropriate course evaluation tool. 
• Respect the confidentiality of student information; refrain from discussing or 
releasing such information except within recognized limits.
• Demonstrate integrity and positive interpersonal and communication skills.
• Fulfill all expectations of adjunct faculty.
• Effective teaching via Zoom, IVN, online, in person class.
• Communicate and collaborate with faculty, mentor, or department chair.
• Use common assessment tracking questions for the final assessment and report the 
tracking results on time to the faculty in charge.
• Accurately complete course assessments and submit them within department 
timelines.
• Join department meetings and participate in college activities as able.
• Provide the course evaluation at the end of each semester and encourage 
completion.
Skills:
• Demonstrated proficiency in the technical area of expertise.
• Well versed in current teaching trends, techniques, resources, and technology for 
both onsite and virtual learning, as necessary.



Qualifications/Education



Current national certification in Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Science/Technology. Must possess at least one of the listed certifications. - Required



OR



Current national certification as Medical Assistant, LPN or RN. - Required



Associate's degree (Minimum) or Higher - Degree in an Allied Health or related subject -Required



Experience


In addition to the knowledge/education, the following related work experience is typically required for this position.  An equivalent combination of education and recent, related experience may be acceptable.



Two years performing venipuncture and capillary puncture in a healthcare setting. (If Phlebotomy was not the primary function of work experience candidate must show evidence that experience is sufficient) - Required



Two years teaching experience in higher education - Preferred



Experience utilizing technology including Microsoft Word and other software programs. - Required



Experience teaching over an Interactive Video Network/Zoom is preferred. - Preferred



Teaching Dual Enrollment - Preferred
