Our Story
29 Markle Ct is more than just a restaurant—it’s a deeply personal expression of culture, creativity, and community. Founded in 2022 in the heart of downtown Bridgeport, Connecticut, this warm and inviting space was born from a dream shared by three visionaries: Executive Chef Damon “Daye” Sawyer, entrepreneur Wesley Arbuthnott, and hospitality professional Ishalee Green. Together, they built not just a restaurant, but a home for love, storytelling, and soulful nourishment.
At its core, 29 Markle Ct operates under a powerful and heartfelt philosophy: “Always with Love.” It’s not just a slogan—it’s the essence of everything they do. From the first welcome at the door to the final bite of dessert or sip of a perfectly balanced cocktail, guests are embraced like family. This commitment to care and intentionality extends to the entire team, the local purveyors, and the wider community that 29 Markle Ct proudly serves.
Chef Damon “Daye” Sawyer, a self-taught chef and former musician, brings an unconventional and profoundly artistic approach to his cuisine. His culinary voice is bold, genre-defying, and deeply rooted in lived experiences. Chef Daye draws from global flavors and techniques while remaining grounded in soul food traditions and seasonal, ingredient-driven cooking. Every plate he creates tells a story—one of resilience, joy, and connection.
His signature dishes—like house-smoked proteins, handmade pastas, and vibrant seasonal vegetables—showcase his deep respect for technique and flavor. With ingredients sourced from trusted farms and sustainable producers, every meal is grounded in quality and integrity.
At the heart of the bar program is Rebecca Legoute, whose role as mixologist is essential to the soul of the restaurant. Rebecca brings a meticulous, expressive approach to cocktail making—crafting drinks that don’t just complement the food, but expand upon the stories it tells. Her creations draw from seasonal ingredients, global influences, and moments of nostalgia, offering guests an immersive experience that mirrors the rhythm and emotion of the food coming out of the kitchen.
Beyond food and drink, 29 Markle Ct is a cultural space—alive with art, music, laughter, and meaningful conversation. It’s a place where people gather to celebrate life’s milestones, honor traditions, and forge new connections. The space reflects the vibrancy and diversity of its Bridgeport community, with events, collaborations, and programming that extend the restaurant’s mission beyond its walls.
Recognized as one of Connecticut’s most exciting culinary destinations, 29 Markle Ct has received accolades such as Best New Restaurant 2023 and a nomination for Chef of the Year 2024 from the Connecticut Restaurant Association. But the real reward is in the relationships built and the stories shared across the table.
29 Markle Ct is not just a place to dine—it’s a space to feel. To be seen, heard, nourished, and loved.
