Direct Endorsement (DE) Underwriter

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Direct Endorsement (DE) Underwriter is responsible for analyzing and authorizing or recommending approval/denial of mortgage loan applications in accordance with the Veterans Affairs (VA) and Federal Housing Authority (FHA) to ensure compliance with all applicable guidelines and regulatory requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Loan Underwriting 85%

• Process, underwrite, evaluate, and analyze mortgage loans submitted through the Encompass system carefully and efficiently while following bank, VA, FHA, and other relevant guidelines.
• Assess all calculations and documentation for accuracy, and analyze income or tax documents to make sure mortgage loan applications meet compliance standards and follow program guidelines.
• Make sound underwriting decisions based on the analysis of financial information, credit reports, and other relevant factors.
• Maintain accuracy when using automated and manual systems for underwriting loans.
• Exercise discretion and use analytical skills to find inconsistencies in information or documentation and prevent fraud.
• Assist the sales team to structure appealing loan packages.
• Consult with the accounting team to ensure applicants meet the conditions for underwriting before closing a loan.
• Communicate loan decisions in writing and verbally using the bank-approved format.

Other 15%

• Respond to audits and quality control reviews. 
• Attend and participate in regular departmental meetings.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent work experience 
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in similar job duties
• Underwriting Certification preferred 

Work Location:
This position is based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Remote work arrangements may be considered for qualified candidates, depending on business needs and department requirements.
