Resident Advocate

Position Summary:

Provides information, referrals, and advocacy services to residents.

Duties And Responsibilities:

Within the limits of agency policy and practice, this position is authorized to carry out the following in a professional and ethical manner:

1. Handles 24 hour crisis line on shift
2. Facilitate services for residents
3. Orients new residents to shelter procedures.
4. Document all services and activities in resident files daily
5. Read and follow agency and program policy manuals
6. Successfully complete all training requirements
7. Interact with residents on a daily basis a minimum of 3 hours per shift
8. Assist with meal preparation, child care, chores as needed
9. Complete safety checks of the shelter during shift
10. Maintain shelter cleanliness
11. Notify on-call worker in cases of emergency
12. Restock supplies as needed
13. Must be able to maintain professional boundaries.
14. Will obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid Certification.
15. Will attend New Service Provider Training.
16. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

1. Good verbal and written communication skills
2. Computer proficiency with Microsoft Word.
3. Good organizational skills.
4. Ability to communicate with people from diverse cultures.
5. Knowledge of services available within the community.
6. Remain current on issues re: DV and Sexual Assault. 
7. Ability to respond supportively to persons/clients in crisis.
8. Ability to enter progress notes and statistics via computer. 

Minimum Education and Experience:

1. High School Diploma or GED

Special Conditions of Employment:

1. Valid Driver’s License, a working motor vehicle, and proof of current vehicle insurance.
2. Undergo and successfully pass a State of Michigan LIEN Check and Central Registry Clearance.
3. Pre-Employment Drug and Alcohol Screen.
4. Negative TB Test upon hire with follow-up TB tests as required by The Avenue policy.
5. Undergo a background check with no recent felony convictions and no abuse/neglect convictions. 
6. Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings, weekends and holidays, as necessary.
