Job Description - School Nurse (Limited Contract)


School Nurse
(Limited Contract - Approximately 15-20 Days or 1.5-2.0 Days Per Week August-May)

 

SUMMARY

The School Nurse provides health consultation and prevention services to support student well-being for students attending Marquette-Alger RESA’s specialized programs (Great Lakes Recovery Center classroom, Teaching Family Homes classroom, Transition classrooms, and Superior Shores classrooms). The total student enrollment for the Marquette-Alger RESA specialized programs ranges from approximately 50-70 at any given time. 

 

The School Nurse role assists the programs in identifying emerging health concerns, developing appropriate responses, and maintaining compliance with health-related laws. The School Nurse acts as a liaison among families, staff, healthcare providers, and community agencies to ensure safe, effective, and equitable student health practices.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Health Leadership & Consultation
    • Provide consultation, leadership, training, and professional development in public health, student wellness, and health-related legal compliance to Marquette-Alger RESA program staff.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of classroom-specific health strategies and procedures.
    • Provide guidance to personnel, students, and families regarding communicable diseases, including prevention strategies, reporting requirements, and response protocols.
    • Monitor, interpret, and disseminate research, policies, and legislation impacting school health programs.
    • Provide guidance on evidence-based practices related to school-wide health promotion and safety.
  • Direct & Indirect Student Services
    • Provide timely, accurate documentation of student illnesses, injuries, and services.
    • Develop and update Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs) based on student assessments and needs.
    • Maintain required emergency equipment (EpiPens, AEDs, opioid antagonists) and associated records at all agency buildings and classrooms.
    • Participate in IEP meetings where student health affects educational access.
    • Participate in home visits when appropriate to assess student needs.
    • Support communication between schools and families regarding student health needs and public health issues.
  • Training & Communication
    • Design and deliver in-service training and classroom education for students, families, and staff on health-related topics.
    • Assist in preparing communication materials on school-wide health and wellness issues.
    • Interpret medical documentation for school staff while maintaining confidentiality (HIPAA/FERPA).
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and two years of relevant experience OR Master’s in Nursing, Public Administration, or Public Health.
  • State of Michigan Registered Nurse License
  • Michigan School Nurse Certification or willingness to obtain
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve, work independently, and communicate effectively with students, staff, and families
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Zoom
  • Valid driver’s license with regular travel required within Marquette County; occasional statewide travel possible

  • Must demonstrate high levels of organization, time management, and adaptability
  • Must be self-directed, enthusiastic, and capable of working in diverse educational environments
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Part-time, limited contract position of approximately 15-20 days over the course of the school year. Must have regular and reliable job attendance, performance, and the physical ability to do the job.

 

REPORTS TO: Director of Mental Health Services

 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:  According to Marquette-Alger RESA MEA Collective Bargaining Agreement
