Position Summary:
Willmer Engineering is seeking a highly experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer with specialized expertise in Earthquake Engineering and Coastal Geology in the Southeastern U.S. You will work as a Seismic Subject Matter Expert (SME) and be part of a senior review team. This part-time role will include technical oversight, mentoring, and leading efforts to standardize seismic design practices across statewide infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Seismic Design Manual Leadership
Lead development of GDOT’s Geotechnical Seismic Design Manual.
Define and document best practices in seismic site investigation, design, and reporting.
Collaborate with the Bridge Office and other GDOT divisions to align and implement design standards.
Update manuals as codes evolve; provide training on their use.
2. Seismic Subject Matter Expert Duties
Perform seismic hazard analyses and liquefaction evaluations.
Guide seismic site classification, ground motion selection, and design recommendations.
Evaluate seismic risks to foundations, embankments, retaining structures, etc.
Serve as liaison between the Geotechnical Bureau and other engineering offices.
Contribute to research and peer reviews on seismic risk and resilience.
3. Mentorship and Training
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers on seismic and geotechnical engineering.
Develop and deliver training sessions to internal teams and external stakeholders.
. Technical Review of Engineering Reports
Review in-house and consultant reports, including:
Bridge and Wall Foundation Investigations (ASD/LRFD)
Soil Survey Summaries
PDA and WEAP Reports
Culvert and Lighting Foundation Investigations
5. Additional Support Functions
Assist in resolving construction/maintenance issues.
Review cost and man-hour estimates.
Contribute to research and special geotechnical projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering (Master’s preferred).
P.E. License in Georgia (Required).
Minimum 15 years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience.
At least 10 years in geotechnical earthquake engineering for DOT infrastructure.
Proficiency in seismic design and analysis tools.
Experience with GDOT, AASHTO, and FHWA guidelines.
Excellent technical writing, leadership, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred: Experience in Southeastern U.S. coastal geology and DOT projects.
Compensation:
Part-Time (20 hrs/week)
Competitive hourly rate based on experience
