Job Description - Shelter Cook (Part Time)

Description

Cooks at Youth Futures are responsible for providing a high standard of food within the agreed budget for the Shelter Home as well as ensuring that meals provided offer a sound nutritional diet. These duties will involve working within clearly established procedures and policies where regular guidance and direction is provided. This person is responsible for upkeep of the kitchen and kitchen duties while preparing food that is both donated and purchased.

Requirements

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  1. Coordinate with nutritionist to prepare, cook and present meals and snacks for clients to a high standard, having regard to the budget of the establishment.
  2. To assist with the planning of varied menus, according to USDA standards.
  3. Prepping ahead for meals that fall outside of scheduled hours and direct communication with staff who will be on shift to serve the food.
  4. To ensure that meals are prepared in advance and safely stored for use when not on duty.
  5. To maintain updated records of client and staff’s dietary requirements of residents and to adhere to the recommendations of medical advisers. To offer advice on suitable foods as appropriate.
  6. To connect and communicate with staff in order to ensure that an efficient service is provided when not on the premises.
  7. To advise on the ordering of provisions and fresh food on a regular basis and to check the quality and quantity of all goods received including acknowledgment of safe receipt.
  8. Facilitate and deliver to other nonprofits when there is an excess quantity of food donations, which aims to reduce unnecessary food waste.
  9. To ensure that proper stock controls are exercised and that foods are used in rotation according to their storage life, to ensure that supplies are used economically.
  10. To ensure that kitchen supplies are securely stored and appropriately used.
  11. To monitor kitchen and plate waste and make recommendations on changes to meal proportions as appropriate.
  12. To ensure that all the above tasks are carried out in accordance with safe food preparation and food handler’s policies regarding food hygiene, health and safety.
  13. To ensure that all kitchen equipment is safely and correctly stored when not in use, having regard to the safety of residents of the home.
  14. To regularly defrost fridges and freezers, and clean all other kitchen equipment on a regular basis.
  15. Complete physical tracking for staff, volunteer and client meals.
  16. Maintain the log in the Kitchen binder at your site and ensure all items are being tracked and recorded as needed.
  17. To report immediately to your direct Manager any defects in kitchen equipment for replacement.
  18. To undertake on-going training in food preparation, hygiene, health and safety.
  19. Attendance at monthly staff meetings and other trainings as needed in regards to your position.
  20. Utilization and tracking new recipes, menus and directions in the organizations database.
  21. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 19 years of age or older; and
  2. Possess or have the ability to obtain food handler’s permit

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Previous experience cooking in either a residential or commercial setting

PHYSICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:

The following work environment characteristics described below are daily encounters while performing essential functions of the Cook job. While performing the duties of this job, the Cook must be able to:

  1. Stand for extended periods of time
  2. Move around the facility, kneel, bend, crouch, and reach repeatedly
  3. Lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds routinely
  4. Tolerate exposure to noise and heat in a kitchen environment

COMPENSATION:

Pay: Starting base pay of $16.00 per hour.

Hours: Part-time. Flexible but regular hours to be schedule/decided with direct Manager in regards to the needs of

each individual facility.
