Job Description - Special Needs Coordinator

SPECIAL NEEDS COORDINATOR


JOB DESCRIPTION


CENTRAL WESLEYAN CHURCH



SUNDAYS: Greet and welcome all new guests who have a family member with special needs/disabilities. Do a short interview about their child in order to receive their child for the day. Make arrangements to connect during the next week to get more detailed information on how to work with their child.




  • Assign Special Needs Buddies to Students. 

  • Respond to ALL difficult situation, meltdowns, aggressive behaviors, and schedule times to observe students who may need extra help participating. 

  • Connect with every Buddy about how their students did that day.



PREPARATIONS:



  • Research what other churches are doing for people with disabilities.

  • Research to educate our team about disabilities, the diagnoses of kids we serve to share with Buddies, and how to create a welcoming inclusive environment here at Central.

  • Research what services/activities/classes/etc. we can develop for people of all ages of disabilities for upcoming events, training purposes, and ministry.

  • Be a resource for all things disabilities for our church staff. We are available for all ages.

  • Recruit and train volunteers.

  • Send regular communications that includes announcements, training, changes, etc.

  • Develop and maintain the Sunday volunteer rotation schedule.

  • Develop and maintain a student spreadsheet that includes personal information, parent contact information, and information received from the parent interview. This form is available for our volunteers to read quickly about their assigned child in order know how to work with each student.

  • Connect with parents on a regular basis about how things are going with their child and ask if there are there any changes that we should know about. Offer our support where needed.

  • Interview new parents on behalf of their child to learn about their child’s abilities, limitations, interests, sensory challenges (what are they, how does their child respond, how to help their child to recover), eating and bathroom details.

  • Provide supplies and safe snacks for the classrooms. 

  • Plan 2-3 dinner events throughout the year for families to connect with one another and to connect with our staff and volunteers.

  • Our Special Needs Night at the Playland takes place on the 1st Thursday of each month throughout the year. Recruit volunteers, connect with families, and provide snacks.

  • Adult Friendship Class. Recruit teachers, supply curriculum, snacks, and activities.

  • Provide two outings/events during the school year.

  • Develop with Live Design all promotional materials.

  • Support the Central Kids Team with events and weekly web update submissions.

  • Support Central, the Water's Edge Network, our staff, and be a light in our community for Christ.
