Core Responsibilities:

  • Assessment and Diagnosis:
    • Evaluate individuals to identify the nature and severity of their communication and swallowing difficulties.
    • Use standardized tests, observations, and other assessment tools to gather information.
    • Develop a comprehensive diagnosis based on the assessment findings.
  • Treatment and Intervention:
    • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans to address specific communication and swallowing needs.
    • Use various therapeutic techniques, strategies, and technologies to improve skills.
    • Provide ongoing support and guidance to clients and their families.
  • Education and Counseling:
    • Educate clients, families, and other professionals about communication and swallowing disorders.
    • Provide counseling and support to help individuals cope with communication challenges.
    • Advocate for the needs of individuals with communication and swallowing disorders.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, occupational therapists, and educators, to provide comprehensive care.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss client progress and treatment plans.
  • Documentation:
    • Maintain accurate and detailed records of client assessments, treatment plans, and progress.
    • Prepare reports and other documentation as needed.

Types of Disorders Treated:

  • Speech Disorders:
    • Articulation disorders (difficulty producing sounds).
    • Fluency disorders (e.g., stuttering).
    • Voice disorders (e.g., hoarseness).
  • Language Disorders:
    • Expressive language disorders (difficulty expressing thoughts and ideas).
    • Receptive language disorders (difficulty understanding language).
    • Cognitive-communication disorders (e.g., difficulty with attention, memory, and organization).
  • Swallowing Disorders:
    • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).
  • Other Disorders:
    • Social communication disorders
    • Resonance disorders
