Summer Camp Counselor

Classification: Hourly, Non-exempt

Position Type: Part-time, seasonal

Compensation: $20 - $25/hr. Pay based on experience and leadership duties

Start Date:  June 9th, 2025

Hours:  Various positions available, ranging from 10 - 40 hours per week

Reports to: Director of Summer Programs

Objective:

Summer Camp Counselors provide leadership and guidance and are the primary caregivers for each camper. They are responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities as well as guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. Counselors must also utilize flexibility, adaptability, and overall program awareness to step into multiple roles throughout the summer in support of the summer camp program as a whole.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan and implement a progressive camp program, seeing to the total development of the camper mentally and physically


• Supervise activities of children, including but not limited to music, games, art, and outside activities


• Provide opportunities for the development of awareness in each camper


• Provide an enjoyable experience for each camper


• Participate in the general planning of the camp program


• Set a good example in promptness, manners, language, appearance, and health


• Set a good example in respect and care for the facilities and the outdoors


• Create and maintain group unity by making everyone feel a part of the group


• Check group attendance each morning


• Keep the safety of campers in mind at all times. Campers are never to be left unattended


• Know the whereabouts of the group at all times, including early morning arrivals, trips, etc.


• Keep all equipment in good operating condition and be responsible for returning items to their proper place


• Attend staff meetings and trainings


• Maintain positive relations with parents and other staff


• Assist in maintaining and cleaning of assigned areas


• Report all program changes and equipment needs to the Director of Summer Program


• Assist activity directors while participating in their activities


• Report to the Director of Summer Programs with any difficult or unusual situations

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

• Must be 18 years of age or a high school graduate


• Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications 


• Proof of a negative TB Test


• Complete a background check


• Possess two years’ experience working with youth


• Have a genuine interest in the character development of youth


• Ability to interact with all age levels


• Be reliable, prompt, & responsive


• Be a good communicator


• Be organized, flexible, and efficient


• Be willing to take on necessary jobs as designated by the supervisor


• Be able to work with individuals as well as groups


• Be able to work well with a group of adults (teamwork)


• Be sensitive to the confidential nature of some interactions and maintain confidentiality appropriately


• Maintain a sense of humor, be goofy, and have fun
