Job Description - Summer Camp Division Leader

Dwight Summer Camp 2026 – Summer Camp Division Leader

Are you ready to inspire, energize, and make a lasting impact this summer? Join the Dwight Summer Camp team, where for over a decade we’ve been creating unforgettable experiences for campers aged 4–12. Our beautiful facilities—including a six-lane pool, visual and performing arts studios, pickleball courts, gyms, design and science labs, and close proximity to Central Park—provide the perfect backdrop for summer adventures. But what truly makes Dwight special is our people.

We’re seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated, and caring Summer Camp Division Leader to help us create a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment. You’ll lead a passionate team of counselors, guiding them to deliver exceptional experiences while inspiring growth, confidence, and creativity in every camper. If you’re driven to lead with purpose, motivate others, and make a positive difference in children’s lives, this could be your perfect summer role. Join us and make this summer one to remember— for our staff, campers, and for you.

Dates & Schedule:

  • Camp Duration: Monday–Friday, June 15 – August 7, 2026 (Closed Friday, June 19, for Juneteenth & Friday, July 3, for Independence Day)

Compensation & Benefits:

  • $20–$28/hour, commensurate with experience
  • Lunch provided
  • $150 bonus for completing required camp orientations & training
  • Staff perk: children of staff working 7–8 weeks may attend camp for $50/week per child

What You’ll Do:

Camper Supervision & Safety:

  • Manage and support 10–15 staff members of various ages and experience levels to ensure they fulfill the job responsibilities and requirements of a “General Counselor.”
  • Supervise 65-90 campers aged 4–12, ensuring their physical and emotional safety during daily activities, swimming sessions, and NYC field trips.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment.
  • Guide staff and campers through transitions, reinforce behavior expectations, and respond to conflicts or emergencies.

Activity Leadership & Thematic Programming:

  • Independently plan and lead one physical activity and one creative craft per week, aligned with the weekly themes, and deliver them to 3–5 different divisions throughout the week.
  • Be responsible for leading weekly field trips and serving as the primary point of contact for the Camp Director in the event of an emergency.
  • Support weekly themed events of 250 campers, guest performances, and camp-wide celebrations.
  • Adapt activities to suit different age groups and skill levels, fostering creativity and teamwork.

Aquatic Program Participation:

  • Reinforced swimming schedules and safety expectations with both staff and campers to ensure smooth operations and a safe aquatic environment.
  • Assist in the pool 3–4 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  • Model safe swimming practices and support younger campers with changing and pool routines.

Role Modeling & Mentorship:

  • Lead by example, demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and enthusiasm.
  • Support staff and campers’ personal, social, and emotional growth.
  • Model community values during meals and throughout the day.
  • Ensure group cohesiveness between 3–5 different divisions

Team Collaboration & Communication:

  • Attend weekly meetings with the Camp Director to review, update, and coordinate day-to-day camp operations.
  • Lead weekly staff meetings, training sessions, and team discussions.
  • Work closely with approximately 60 staff members to ensure smooth operations.
  • Communicate professionally with campers, families, and staff.

Leadership & Mentoring of Junior Staff:

  • Lead 10–15 staff members of varying ages and experience levels, providing mentorship and support to enhance their skills and professional growth since joining the team.
  • Guide Counselors-in-Training (ages 17–18) and supervise younger volunteers (ages 14–16).

Administrative & Logistical Support:

  • Document and report medical needs or concerns to the Health Director promptly to ensure camper safety and proper care.
  • Enforce positive communication with parents and families, addressing questions and concerns to foster trust and engagement.
  • Ensure staff classrooms are kept to a high standard, updating displays and materials to reflect weekly themes and enhance the camp environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Teaching, childcare, or classroom experience
  • Experience working with children aged 4–12 from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities
  • Prior summer camp experience
  • Undergraduate studies related to childcare/education/leadership

Required Training (provided by Dwight):

  • Online Sexual Harassment & Mandated Reporter training
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification (if required)
  • Virtual Summer Camp Staff Training
  • Two in-person staff site trainings (late May–early June)
  • Mandatory Swim Test
  • First Day Orientation: Monday, June 15, 7:15–8:30 AM
