Position Overview
ICDT! is seeking a reliable and enthusiastic Technical Assistant to support the technical elements of our theatre productions. This role works closely with the Technical Director and production team to bring set, lighting, and sound designs to life. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, safety-minded, and comfortable working in a youth theatre environment.
Responsibilities
Assist with set construction, assembly, and strike, including measuring, cutting, assembling, and installing scenic elements
Safely and confidently use power tools and hand tools (e.g., drills, saws, sanders) under the direction of the Technical Director
Assist in the execution of scenic paint treatments and finishes, supporting the visual storytelling of productions.
Help fulfill the technical and scenic design vision as directed by the Technical Director
Support prop creation and acquisition, including fabrication, modification, and sourcing in collaboration with the technical director and design team.
Support lighting and sound setup, including basic focusing, setup, and operation as needed
Assist during rehearsals, tech week, and performances with technical cues and backstage needs
Work in shared spaces with children and teen performers, especially during tech week, maintaining a calm, professional, and safety-focused presence
Help organize and maintain technical equipment, tools, backstage areas, and warehouse
Identify and report safety concerns; consistently follow all theatre and shop safety protocols
Qualifications
Experience or demonstrated comfort with set construction, scenic assembly, and painting
Comfort using power tools and working with basic construction materials
Strong understanding of and commitment to safe work practices in a theatre and shop environment
Ability to lift, move, and assemble set pieces and technical equipment
Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented attitude
Reliability and flexibility, including availability for evenings and weekends as required by the production schedule
Comfort working around and occasionally alongside children and teens in a youth theatre setting
Preferred (but not required)
Prior experience working on youth theatre or educational productions
Familiarity with lighting boards, sound equipment, or scenic construction techniques
Interest in theatre education and mentorship
Artistically motivated assistant with a strong interest in scenic painting, including a willingness to learn, research, and present new techniques and materials.
Compensation
This is a part-time position, approximately 20 hours per week, paying $20–$25 per hour, depending on experience.
