Job Description - The Director of Cancer Support Services (Part-Time position)


  

The Director of Cancer Support Services develops, implements and oversees education, outreach, and wellness programs that support individuals in the community impacted by cancer or at increased risk for hereditary cancer, with a particular emphasis on Ashkenazi Jewish populations and those impacted by breast or ovarian cancer. Primary responsibilities include developing and implementing culturally relevant, non-medical support services, fostering individualized connections to peers and health professionals, and facilitating access to resources provided through the national nonprofit Sharsheret. Key initiatives include hereditary cancer education and awareness, fitness-based wellness offerings in collaboration with the J’s facilities, Lynnie’s Light fundraising event and community-wide programs and events focused on early detection and prevention. 

This job will be open in September 2025.

  • Provide leadership and vision for The Hamsa Wellness Community. 
  • Develop and implement new and existing Hamsa      Wellness Community programs and initiatives.
  • Gather feedback, using Agency survey tools, after programming concludes to report outcomes and identify areas for improvement. 
  • Work collaboratively with the J’s Fitness team to plan and implement restoration programs, including but limited to Yoga for Cancer and Strength Over Cancer.
  • Work collaboratively with the J’s Massage to plan and implement oncology massage.
  • Work directly with Yoga for Cancer instructors regarding class schedule. Manage non-member participants. 
  • Oversee coordination and implementation of annual event Lynnie’s Light for Life including developing messaging and content of event.
  • Fundraising and development in coordination with J Development department, to include cultivating and stewarding The      Hamsa Wellness Center specific donors, foundation research and grant writing to support The Hamsa Wellness Center activities and programs.
  • Hire, train, and supervise Support Group Facilitator. Manage all support group activities other than group facilitation. 
  • Develop and staff ongoing volunteer committee(s) to assist in planning and implementation of programs and initiatives.
  • Represent The Hamsa Wellness Community in the community. Serve as community resource and educator on the issue of increased risk of breast and other related cancers among Ashkenazi Jews. 
  • Create and adhere to viable budget for programs
  • Work with J Marketing department to develop marketing plans to ensure programs and initiatives are promoted to maximize participation and involvement from community members, includes social media posting and written communication.
  • Refer women and families to Sharsheret’s national programs, including Sharsheret’s national peer support network, for additional support when appropriate. Work directly with Sharsheret National Key contacts.
  • Promote new and existing programs around the J and in the community.
  • Other duties as requested by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in social service field with background in Health Care, Social Service or Cancer Support/ Education preferred. 
  • 3-5 years prior experience coordinating events, including marketing and preferably working with lay committees
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to design and manage projects from conception to completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform effective community outreach and engagement.
  • Experience in grant writing, fundraising, donor cultivation, solicitations, and other financial resource development tasks preferred.
  • Supervisory and administrative experience preferred.
  • Passion for cancer education, support, and survivorship – particularly in breast and ovarian cancer. 
  • Ability to communicate compassionately and effectively with individuals impacted by cancer, including those at increased hereditary risk, as well as with medical and community stakeholders, including members of the clergy. 
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, creative, and proactive; strong problem-solving and independent work skills. 
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and social media platforms.
  • Strong team player with the ability to collaborate across departments. 
  • Available to work evenings and Sundays, as required.
  • Ability to create a safe, supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing personal experiences; must uphold the highest standards of confidentiality and emotional sensitivity.
