Youth Mentor

One Part-Time Position. Up to 19 hours per week.

Various days and hours.

Hiring Range: $15.75 to $17.17 / hr., depending upon education and experience.

This position will remain open until filled.

Minimum Requirements

Required:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Minimum of 21 years of age.

Preferred:

1. One year or more of direct experience with children or adolescents.

2. One year or more direct experience with intellectual and developmental disabilities population. 

3. Experience in working with individuals with complex mental health.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for providing a person center therapeutic relationship for youth or adults with I/DD who are struggling with mental, behavioral, social, and emotional impairment. The primary responsibility is to support members in learning to cope with their mental and behavioral health challenges. In close coordination with the therapist, the Youth Mentor helps the members learn and practice skills that will help them improve their mental health symptoms and live in the community. This position requires the ability to teach and model effective personal interactions and behaviors, advocate for the members in different systems they are involved in, share personal experiences, mentor, and help the members build natural supports and community 

connections.

To provide safe, nurturing, and supportive environments for children, families, and adults so that they may have the opportunities to develop their strengths, maximize their potential and fully participate in society.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Work closely with therapists to incorporate treatment related goals to youth to reduce behavioral health concerns. 

2. Promote a safe environment for children and youth. 

3. Teach self-help, social, interpersonal, and daily living skills. 

4. Follow and implement assigned individualized support and services for children and youth. 

5. Provide behavior management as required (i.e. defusing anger, emotional outbursts). 

6. Respond to crisis situations and assist crisis staff with support and services. 

7. Document and/or communicate per procedures/protocols and required pertinent information regarding child/youth for who this position is responsible for at any given time. 

8. Observe and document child and youth’s progress in accordance with Medicaid standards through documentation databases. 

9. Maintain professional boundaries while establishing a trustworthy and beneficial relationship.

10. Co-Facilitate groups with children and youth. 

11. Transport child/youth in Ariel van or personal vehicle, as needed. (to/from appointments, scheduled events, emergencies, individual and program outings. 

12. Administer medications as prescribed, including proper documentation of medication administration; medication errors; medication storage; medication counts per QMAP standards. 

13. Report any issues/concerns. 

14. Complete training required for position. 

15. Communicate regularly and effectively with supervisor, parents, guardians, case manager and all other individuals involved with the client.

16. Perform other duties as assigned. 

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality concerning the child, youth, their family, background information and treatment. 

2. Ability to demonstrate regular attendance and work outside of traditional office hours and settings including nights, weekends and holidays as necessary to meet the needs of the agency and individual served. 

3. Ability to role model positive coping, communication, and boundary setting with children and youth. 

4. Knowledge of how trauma and behavior are connected and appropriate responses to the behaviors. 

5. Knowledge of community resources. 

6. Possess the skills to organize and implement planned and structured activities for individuals served. 

7. Knowledge of foster care and intellectual developmental disabilities. 

8. Ability to be flexible, and able to change direction rapidly. 

9. Ability to be reliable and supportive team player.

10. Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, and complete a variety of tasks in a timely and accurate manner. 

11. Demonstrate skills in critical thinking, conflict resolution, and creativity. 

12. Knowledge of the type of work Ariel Clinical Services provides and represents the agency in positive and professional manner. 

13. Knowledge of basis computer skills.

Education and Experience

Required:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Minimum of 21 years of age.

Preferred:

1. One year or more of direct experience with children or adolescents.

2. One year or more direct experience with intellectual and developmental disabilities population. 

3. Experience in working with individuals with complex mental health. 

Certifications/Licenses

Required: 

• Valid Colorado Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.

• CPR, First Aid – client contact is limited before prior to certification. 

• CPI within 60 days of hire; client contact is limited until this training is completed.

• Van Drivers Training – before driving an Ariel owned vehicle.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None

Physical Demands

1. This position requires that the incumbent be capable of bending, sitting, stretching, and/or reaching regularly for periods up to two hours without a break. 

2. This position requires that the incumbent have adequate hand and finger dexterity to properly perform the functions of the position.

3. This position requires lifting regularly up to 25 pounds, pulling, or pushing persons in wheelchairs; transferring persons weighing more than 50 pounds to and from wheelchairs must be performed with another staff member.

4. At times, physical interventions may be required.

5. This position requires the ability to see, smell, and distinguish temperature, at a level which is adequate to ensure client and staff health and safety. Adaptive devices are acceptable.

6. This position will require daily driving of up to one hour per day and occasionally more as needed. 

Work Environment

1. This position can and will be exposed to all environments from quiet to noisy, climate controlled to extreme outdoor heat and cold.

2. May work in the community or in family home environments.

3. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease is possible but limited.

4. Exposure to hazardous chemicals is possible but limited.
