Job Description - Youth Services Librarian

Cromaine District Library


Hartland, Michigan


Youth Services Librarian


 


POSITION: Part time; 20 hours per week, including evening and weekend hours


REPORTS TO:  Youth & Teen Services Manager


PAY RANGE: $25-$30/hour, dependent upon qualifications.


 


BENEFITS


Paid time off accrued from start (available after completion of the 3-month introductory period), holiday pay, paid birthday and paid bereavement leave. Optional benefits: telework flexibility, deferred compensation plan and various professional development opportunities.  Sunday hours paid at time and a half.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Reference and Reader’s Advisory



  • Provide effective, positive, personalized reference interviews and reader’s advisory assistance in person and via phone and email, utilizing print, non-print, and electronic resources.

  • Conduct efficient reference interviews to determine information need and best sources to use.

  • Move through the Library regularly to check with patrons regarding their information needs.

  • Provide assistance and instruction to the public on the use of the library, its materials, equipment, and the computer catalog.

  • Assist library users with electronic information sources as well as devices that provide access.

  • Initiate ILL and address purchase requests promptly.


Collection Development



  • Select and order materials for children based on reviews, catalogs, recommendations, and patron requests.

  • Preview new materials being added to the collection in order to know what is available and provide it quickly to the patron.

  • Evaluate collection in assigned areas regularly for development or weeding.


Library Programs and Outreach



  • Design and execute library programming for children and parents, create and host in- house programs, and arrange for external presenters.

  • Assist with other programs and events as needed.

  • Participate in outreach activities and community partnerships to further the reach of the library.

  • Assist in training and overseeing teen volunteers


Technology



  • Keep up to date with new technology and ways of accessing information.

  • Perform basic hardware troubleshooting in order to resolve equipment problems as quickly as possible.


 


QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Master’s degree, or 30 credit hours towards the degree, from an ALA-accredited program required

  • Library of Michigan certification level 1 or 2, or ability to obtain certification

  • Experience providing public library services to children preferred


 


 


SKILLS & ABILITIES:



  • Genuine interest in providing superior public service.

  • A passion for serving children and families.

  • Broad knowledge of youth literature, media, and trends.

  • Ability to lead virtual, as well as in-person programming.

  • Ability to use a variety of technologies, including operating systems, Google suite of productivity tools, ILS, as well as varied software and applications and conduct basic troubleshooting.

  • Ability and desire to achieve and maintain cooperative and effective relations with members of the public and other employees.

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Display critical thinking skills and be detail-oriented.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

  • Must be able to make decisions in situations dealing with library security, emergency procedures, and conflict resolution.

    • Seeing; keyboarding; using the telephone; lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds; walking; bending; stooping; crouching; reaching; carrying books or boxes of books; pushing book carts; picking up litter; spreading ice melt

    • Standing or sitting for periods of time

    • Writing or typing to complete work-related documents

    • Mental Demands:

    • Is accurate

    • Able to maintain confidentiality of library records and administrative matters

    • Good time management: is prompt, flexible, works under short time constraints, and meets deadlines

    • Able to interact and work effectively with customers, supervisors, co-workers and volunteers

    • Able to retain concentration and poise despite numerous interruptions



  • Environmental:

    • Normal to loud interior environment
