Standard Bank was established in Port Elizabeth in 1862.  It expanded rapidly, pioneering banking services through southern Africa and developed standards of operating excellence unmatched on the continent.

Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, the holding company is listed as Standard Bank Group Limited on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

As Africa’s largest banking group, the group spans across some 18 countries on the African continent and has been a mainstay of South Africa’s financial system and economy for more than 150 years. Outside of Africa, the group has a presence in some 13 countries, including key economic centres such as China and Brazil.

In 2007, ICBC took a 20.1% shareholding in Standard Bank Group.  In 2014 a transaction was agreed (subject to regulatory approval) for further investment from ICBC to acquire 60% of Standard Bank Plc (i.e. Standard Bank outside of Africa).

Our principal activities are:

1. 
   Precious Metals: trading in physicals, hedging, deposit, loans and bullion leverage for gold, silver, palladium, platinum, Rhodium, Ruthenium and Iridium;


2. 
   Iron Ore and Physical Coal Trading: trading physicals, hedging, and movement of cargoes through the chartering of dry bulkers.


3. 
   Base Metals Trading: trading physicals, hedging, and movement of cargoes through the chartering of dry bulkers.


4. 
   Currency and Rates Trading

ICBC Standard Bank Plc, Singapore Branch is also the hub for Infrastructure, Risk and Governance functions for the Asia Region.
