Staff Software Engineer, Onboarding

We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join the Onboarding team within the Consumer & Business - Growth Engineering organization.

This team owns the platform that powers user onboarding and KYC across every Coinbase retail product, enabling the company to expand into new countries and launch new products while maintaining compliance and regulatory requirements.

You'll lead the technical direction of a high-scale, high-availability onboarding platform, designing systems that directly determine how quickly and safely millions of users can access Coinbase.

What you'll do:

• Own the technical architecture and roadmap for the onboarding platform, designing scalable, reliable systems that support multi-product and multi-country expansion with modern cloud technology and service-oriented architecture.
• Lead end-to-end development of systems that power user signup, identity verification, and KYC workflows, shipping high-quality, well-tested code that directly improves onboarding conversion and compliance coverage.
• Drive the multi-year platform engineering strategy alongside technical leadership, identifying opportunities to reduce onboarding friction while maintaining regulatory requirements across jurisdictions.
• Partner with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to translate product and technical vision into a tangible quarterly roadmap, ensuring alignment between business goals and technical execution.
• Elevate engineering quality across the team by establishing patterns, processes, and standards that raise the bar for code quality, system reliability, and developer productivity.

Required Skills and Experience:

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with deep expertise designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production services in a service-oriented architecture.
• Proven track record as a technical leader who has owned the architecture and long-term strategy of a platform or system at scale, influencing roadmaps across multiple teams.
• Consistent experience shipping high-quality, well-tested code and debugging complex distributed systems problems across multiple services and data stores.
• Strong understanding of compliance-adjacent engineering domains (e.g., identity verification, KYC, onboarding) or demonstrated ability to ramp quickly in regulated, high-stakes environments.
• Experience mentoring and upleveling engineers through code reviews, architectural guidance, and establishing engineering processes that raise team-wide quality.
• Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
