Job Description - Quantity Surveyor

A quantity surveyor (QS) manages all financial and contractual aspects of construction projects. They estimate costs, prepare tender documents, and monitor budgets from initial design to project completion. Their goal is to maximize value for money while ensuring work complies with regulations and stays within budget.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Construction & Tendering

  • Cost Estimation: Calculate quantities and costs for materials, labor, and equipment needed for the project.
  • Feasibility Studies: Conduct initial economic appraisals to determine if a project is viable.
  • Tender Packages: Prepare detailed bills of quantities and draft contracts to solicit bids from contractors.

Project Execution & Cost Control

  • Budget Management: Track project expenditures continuously to prevent cost overruns.
  • Valuations: Assess the value of work completed and process payments for subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Variation Orders: Monitor changes in project design or scope and calculate the associated cost adjustments.

Post-Construction & Contract Administration

  • Dispute Resolution: Negotiate labor contracts, handle commercial risks, and assist with contractual disputes.
  • Final Accounts: Prepare and agree upon the final financial settlement at the end of the project.

Core Requirements

  • Education: A diploma or degree in Quantity Surveying, Building, Construction Economics, or a related field.
  • Commercial Acumen: Strong understanding of market prices, building costs, and construction technologies.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in estimating software, CAD, and advanced Microsoft Excel.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills for dealing with stakeholders
