Job Description - Assistant Professor in Educational/ Developmental Psychology

Overview

The National Institute of Education (NIE) is among the world’s top education institutes, recognised for its excellence in teacher education and educational research.  NIE has played a key and pivotal role in shaping and developing Singapore’s teaching profession and landscape through evidence-informed, practice-focused and values-based programmes and initiatives.

An autonomous institute situated within the research-intensive Nanyang Technological University, NIE is consistently ranked within the top 10 in the world for research impact in the field of Education.

The Psychology and Child & Human Development (PCHD) Department is dedicated to developing evidence-based competencies in psychologists, counsellors, educators, and education specialists. Our faculty has expertise spanning educational and school psychology, counselling psychology, teacher education, early childhood education, special and inclusive education, learning sciences, motivation, cognitive science, and mental health.

We invite applications for an Assistant Professor position in Educational/Developmental Psychology. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching across undergraduate, graduate, and professional education programmes, and engage in research related to the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in psychology or a relevant field, with specialization in educational/developmental psychology.

  • Evidence of at least 4 years of an outstanding teaching track record and innovative uses of technology in teaching.

  • A strong commitment to and aptitude for teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


It will be advantageous for applicants to have:

  • Eligibility for registration or current registration with Singapore Register of Psychologists.

  • A track record of dissertation/thesis supervision for graduate students.

  • Willingness to support the work of colleagues beyond one’s niche area of expertise.

  • Prior knowledge of or the willingness and ability to assimilate to Singapore’s educational landscape and school systems.

Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • To teach existing and new courses at undergraduate and graduate degree levels, as well as pre-service and in-service teacher education.

  • To engage in research that informs policy and practice.

  • To develop a research agenda and programme, and to publish in reputable journals as is customary in his/her field.

  • To establish professional connections with local and international researchers and practitioners involved in his/her specific area of expertise.

  • To share expertise with NIE colleagues through various platforms.

  • To undertake administrative and/or leadership roles and to contribute to other service-related activities at the departmental and Institutional levels.

  • To engage in programme leadership and curriculum design and development

  • Key Contributions: What are your most important research impacts to date?

  • Evidence of Impact: How has your work influenced your field, policy, or practice? Provide evidence (e.g., publications, citations, policy uptake, industry adoption).

  • Academic Impact: How has your work advanced theory, methods, or knowledge?

  • Societal/Policy/Industry Impact (if applicable): Describe influence on policy, regulation, industry standards, or broader society.

  • Research Identity: What distinguishes your work? Articulate a clear and coherent research trajectory.

  • Contribution and Leadership: Clarify your role in collaborative projects.

  • Future Impact: Outline how your research will shape the field over the next 5–10 years

5. Teaching Impact Statement (up to 3 pages)

Applicants should demonstrate their impact on student learning and education by addressing:

  • How have you enhanced student learning and engagement?

  • What teaching innovations or improvements have you implemented, and why?

  • How do you promote interdisciplinary thinking?

  • How do you incorporate experiential and collaborative learning?

  • How have you contributed to a positive teaching culture?
